Rory McIlroy after finishing round two on 10 under, three shots behind leader Cameron Smith:

"Cam Smith has been playing well this year and so has Cameron Young. Both phenomenal players; a great leaderboard with DJ (Dustin Johnson) and Viktor Hovland there.

More A-Listers than a Tarantino flick on the leaderboard.

    Here's a recap of who's in there...

  9. The Hovland-McIlroy pairing is setpublished at 20:45 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Hovland -10, Lowry -4, Thomas -2 (F)

Hovland lines up an eagle putt in his rather snazzy jumper. needs a bit of pace to get up that hill and comes to rest a couple of feet from the pin. He marks that up - assured of a birdie finish.

However Thomas doesn't not quite get the oomph behind it and he leaves himself a tricky putt which he also doesn't give any pace to as it skirts around the cup. How annoying as he finishes with a par putt.

Oh my - if you are going to finish well, why not do it with a birdie birdie finish, and that is exactly what Lowry does.

Hovland finishes his off with a birdie and we can savour a Hovland-McIlroy round tomorrow.

  10. Missing the cutpublished at 20:44 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

Here's some of the big names that won't be gracing the Old Course's hallowed fairways over the weekend:

    • Louis Oosthuizen +1
    • Collin Morikawa +1
    • Padraig Harrington +3
    • Brooks Koepka +4
    • Phil Mickelson +5
    • Tiger Woods +9

The big question left tonight is whether Viktor Hovland will be playing alongside Rory McIlroy or not.

If not, then it will be Dustin Johnson.

Perhaps a McIlroy/Johnson pairing could chew the fat over the LIV Golf revolution? That would be docuseries gold.

Ahh, that would have been some finish! “In, in…” screams one fan, but it’s not to be. And with that, a flurry of fans in the 18th grandstand head for the exits.

The music’s getting up in the Rusacks Hotel if you’re looking for somewhere to keep the party going…

  14. Par for McIlroypublished at 20:35 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Morikawa +1, Schauffele -5 (F)

Oh no! Rory McIlroy's birdie putt sneaks past the eyes of the hole.

Not the ideal finish for McIlroy but that will not take any gloss off an excellent round.

Think he's going to be more than satisfied with where he is at and, more importantly, how he's playing.

A few putts haven't dropped but he's been almost impeccable from tee to green.

  15. WATCH: Stunning eagle from the rough for Viktor Hovlandpublished at 20:33 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

Hovland put himself in the hunt with this beauty earlier...

    Hovland -9, Lowry -3, Thomas -2 (17)

Hovland needs a little pace to set himself with an easy two-putt but oh dear, there was no conviction behind that.

But there was a confident rap for his next attempt for an excellent par.

Now, Lowry gently coaxes the ball down the slope and... it's a birdie! It slightly makes up for his horrors the hole before.

A 10 on the roar scale is “Tiger”, by the way - but like L’Equipe’s match ratings they come around very rarely, and we’ve already had one today when the great man made his emotional finish. I’m sure Rory will understand… he’d rather have a birdie anyway.

  18. Postpublished at 20:27 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Morikawa +2, Schauffele -4 (17)

The bank manager can relax. Morikawa, as good as an effort it is from below the green, does not hole out.

What a great champion he has been. But the road ends here, my friend. For another year at least.

McIlroy next,,, woah there! A bold eagle putt from the Valley of Sin races past the pin and leaves a slight knee-knocker back.

  19. Postpublished at 20:25 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Morikawa +2, Schauffele -4 (17)

Defending champion Collin Morikawa needs to knock his second shot in to make the weekend.

Now, not saying it won't happen. But if it does then I'll give him the prize money myself.

Xander Schauffele, by the way, has crept on to the green and will be reaching for the putter.

  20. Postpublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Hovland -9, Lowry -4, Thomas -2 (16)

Hovland smacks his drive right over the corner of the hotel and he really seems to have the bit between his teeth right now. He's had five birdies today and an eagle, and he is hunting down another solid score.

Thomas ends up in the first cut but what a stunner as he rescues himself with a lovely links shot onto the green.

It's not a bad second shot from Hovland but it's not great as he finds himself a little further back.

Lowry is actually the best of the lot, and could erase the horrors of that double bogey.
