  1. Young moves two backpublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Young -11 (14)

Cameron Young becomes the latest beneficiary of the gentle par-five 14th, picking up his fourth birdie of the day to move to within two of Smith.

The New Yorker's doing well to keep the Australian in his sights.

Looking very much like we'll have the Cameron double-act in the final pairing tomorrow afternoon.

  2. 'I got settled in through the loop' - Schefflerpublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Scheffler -8 (68)

World number one Scottie Scheffler, speaking to Sky Sports after carding another 68:

"I got settled in though the loop and made some birdies. The pins make it hard to get close just because of how the slopes are, especially with holes 15 and 16.

"There are some you can get after and some you can't - just where some of the pins are."

    Smith -13 (15)

No birdie for Smith at the 15th, but it's another safe par. Considering how many birdies the 18th has given up over the last 36 hours or so, he'll be thinking 63 here.

Do you really need me to tell you the result? I will anyway - straight at the flag and a chance to go NINE under for his round.

  6. Bogey for McIlroypublished at 17:36 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    McIlroy -7, Morikawa E, Schauffele -5 (7)

Anyone got a pair of binoculars? If so please lend them to Rory McIlroy.

He's putting from a different postcode.

McIlroy leaves his first effort way short and that is not an easy one for a par.

Going first gives a measuring stick to Schauffele, who has a better pace. That will be enough for the three.

Morikawa also misses a lengthy birdie putt and settles for a par.

McIlroy to ensure it is a full house... he's lagged it. A poor four if truth be told.

He slides back down the snake and into the pit of seven-under players.

  7. 'Good to be on the tee as Tiger was waving goodbye' - Rahmpublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Rahm -4 (67)

Spanish world number three Jon Rahm was seething yesterday after a poor performance with the short stick, but has surged up the leaderboard today after a five-under 67.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, he says: "To be honest there was only one difference - the only difference was putting. I bet if you go through yesterday's round and made the same putts it would have been the same four or five under round.

"Yesterday I had four or five three putts, missed a few basically and that was the reason why. It is very difficult to score if you don't make putts."

On whether he is in contention?

"Yeah hopefully - I saw Cam Smith started very hot but his back nine is into the wind that we had so it's going to be very complicated. If they don't get too far ahead, six shots with 36 holes to go - yeah we're in a good position."

His thoughts on being behind Tiger as he came to the end of his round:

"I think yesterday not counting players, caddies or the people that have to be in the group (marshals) - we counted 86 people in the group. Basically media following . A big chaos, right? In our case being behind them we had to wait for these people to get out of our line of sight so definitely had to wait a little extra.

"Yesterday was a waiting game for everybody but today it was really good to be on the tee at least while Tiger was waving goodbye - not that this is going to be his last one, but it was a really cool moment to see everybody around that area, the grandstand on 17 standing up and give a bit of an ovation to somebody that truly deserves it."

    Westwood -4 (11)

Nicely done - Lee Westwood grabs a birdie at the par-three 11th to move back to four under, where he started the day.

The Englishman, 49, holed a 22-foot putt. He is nine behind leader Cameron Smith.

  9. Hovland birdies sevenpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Hovland -7 (7)

Viktor Hovland's on the move again with a tidy birdie at the seventh.

Seven-under would be good enough to lead most Opens on a Friday evening, but not here: Hovland's six back.

    McIlroy -8, Morikawa E, Schauffele -5 (7)

Next up for McIlroy and the lads? The only par three on the front nine.

Rory has the honour, of course, and punches in a low ball which he tries to draw into the pin.

But his hands don't turn through and the ball stays out right.

Good news? He's on the green. Bad news? It's the 10th (which is shared with the eighth).

Schauffele, to his dismay, follows McIlroy out there. Morikawa isn't too happy either after heading right too.

    Social golf.

I mean, Cam Smith is mercilessly bringing the Old Course to its knees, yet he just looks so relaxed.

Leading The Open? Or playing in the monthly medal?

  14. Smith eagles 14!published at 17:22 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Smith -13 (14)

    OH. MY. WORD.

Cameron Smith drains an absolute beast of an eagle putt and moves three clear!

Eight under for the round through 14. He is walking on water right now.

That putt must've been around the 60-feet mark. It never looked anywhere else. Stunning golf.

  17. Birdie for McIlroypublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    McIlroy -8, Morikawa E, Schauffele -5 (7)

First up is Morikawa, who badly needs something to start turning the tide.

Is this the moment? No! His ball is refusing to drop from anywhere outside the inner ring.

Schauffele has a similar line and sees his effort duck left at the last second.

Over to McIlroy to salvage at least one birdie from what could have been a trio... got it!

Little movement on that putt and McIlroy confidently drains it.

Budge up Scottie Scheffler and Tyrrell Hatton, make room for a Northern Irishman in the eight-under crew.

  18. Brown leading amateur at six-underpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Brown -6 (70)

It would be easy for amateurs to get overawed by the sense of occasion at a St Andrews Open, but Barclay Brown has been a portrait of composure over the first two days.

The 21-year-old qualifier backs up his opening 68 with a 70 and he's siting pretty in the race for the silver medal for leading amateur.

Brown is three clear of Italy's Filippo Celli, who shot a brilliant 67 today.

England's Sam Bairstow and Aaron Jarvis of the Cayman Islands are both level par and therefore not quite guaranteed safe passage to the weekend just yet.

Meanwhile, just outside the course is the World Golf Museum and up the road slightly is the ZEN Green Stage - a moving floor set up this week to recreate seven iconic putts...

    Now this was outstanding.

Rory McIlroy's second on the par-four seventh is a thing of beauty.

Stiff forearms are needed for a firm push of a short iron, ball hanging in the wind and stopping almost stone dead about six feet from the hole.

All three of this group are eyeing up birdies as their balls surround the pin.
