Carlota Ciganda was understandably emotional after sealing the crucial point and she told Sky Sports:

"I don’t have many feelings right now. I am so happy I could do this for Suzann and Spain, I am so proud. So happy to do this for everyone here, my family. Just amazing."

Where did you get the resilience to pull off a shot like that?

"When I saw Suzann on 16, she asked me to do a couple of things and I thought 'I am just going to do this for her'. I love her and she deserves this."

How special is it to do this in Spain?

“Amazing. I love my team, I love Europe, I love Spain, I love the Solheim Cup. It’s been a great week and I am just so happy to be here right now."

Europe 14-14 USA - Europe retain the Solheim Cup

    Just thinking about 2024...

Europe have their own new stars, but so do the US - to add to their existing ones.

Megan Khang, Rose Zhang, Angel Yin, Lilia Vu, Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz will be in their side.

That is a strong foundation, and Vu, Zhang and Corpuz won't be the green rookies they were this time.

And the US will NOT want to miss out on the trophy for a fourth consecutive time.

    It's just 51 weeks away...

  6. 'This is where legends are forged'published at 17:50 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

Let's hear from Suzann Pettersen at the closing ceremony:

“It’s been an unbelievable week. We knew this was going to come down to the wire today. I have got to say, being in Spain, coming down to Carlota’s match it was fate.

“The golf has been fantastic. Both Stacy and I agree. It is a lot harder to sit on the sideline. You have no control. You try to line up and off they go and you are literally helpless.

"It’s been a long week and I would like to thank the entire American team for fantastic golf. This is what makes Solheim Cup so special, and this is where legends are forged.

"This place ain’t going to bed tonight."

She lost her singles today - despite an incredible effort in the last three holes - but Linn Grant is a bona fide superstar.

  8. 'Well done ladies'published at 17:43 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

A couple of nice bits of praise on X from three-time major champion and former Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington and current European captain Luke Donald.

Harrington said: "What an incredible performance from 4 points down by Suzanne Pettersen and her team at the Solheim Cup. Particularly brilliant by Caroline Hedwall and Carlota Ciganda to turn their matches at the end with some great play."

Donald added: "A couple of daggers from Carlota to turn her match around on 16 & 17. What a performance from the European Solheim Cup team & Suzanne Pettersen to retain the Cup. Well done ladies."

  9. Ciganda's route to legendary statuspublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

Europe 14-14 USA - Europe retain Solheim Cup

Carlota Ciganda led by three holes after eight holes and looked to be well in control of her match despite playing world number three Nelly Korda.

However the American superstar picked away at that advantage and was all square after 15.

Korda further ratcheted up the pressure when she fired her second into the par-four 16th to six feet.

Ciganda was not going to be denied though, firing her ball in to two feet. Korda then nervously stabbed her birdie putt wide, while the Spaniard tapped in hers to grasp back the momentum.

With Maja Stark earning another European point the scene was set for Ciganda. And the Spaniard delivered.

She almost holed her tee shot to the delight of the thousands that surrounded the par-three 17th.

A scrambled Korda smothered her tee shot left and chipped five feet beyond the hole. The American had to hole her putt, and she did.

But that only added to the drama of the Spaniard rolling in hers to win that crucial 14th point.

Cue elation on the green - and Ciganda etched among the legends of European golf.

Carlota Ciganda, the golfing queen of Spain, on what it was like sealing the Solhein Cup, in front of the actual King of Spain.

"It's amazing, all the support from my family, friends. I have a lot of people here. To play in Spain is always special," said Ciganda.

"To play a Solheim Cup has been just an unbelievable week. I love the captain, I love Suzann, and I just really wanted to play good for her.

"I'm very happy to win the four points in Spain in front of the home crowd. I mean, the Americans, they played amazing as well, so congrats to both teams.

"I think there is nothing like this. To play in Spain in front of your home crowd on Spanish soil, and to have my name being chanted, it's really amazing, very special and just something that I won't forget."

Europe 14-14 USA - Europe retain the Solheim Cup

If you are a European, you're probably pretty happy right now.

And here is some more good news.

We can look forward to a lot more of this kind of Solheim Cup drama in the next decade.

The large majority of the players in these teams will be around for many years to come.

For Europe, you could only imagine this year's vice-captain Anna Nordqvist missing out next year.

Caroline Hedwall and Gemma Dryburgh might have to work hard to earn their places, but it wouldn't be a surprise if nine of this year's side are at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia in 2024.

  13. Lewis 'so proud' of Team USApublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

Stacy Lewis is a class act again in what's always a difficult press conference for the losing captain.

We say losing captain, but remember that the USA did tie the match, so they can rightly be proud of what was a fantastic Solheim Cup performance from both teams.

"I mean, just what a moment for Carlota and women's golf," said Lewis. "Such a cool finish there.

"My team played their hearts out. Just so proud, the way they fought. I just told them, we didn't lose.

"You know, it was a tie and there was so much to build off this week. I think these rookies learned a lot and that's what it's about."

Also remember there's another Solheim Cup next year!

  14. A real team victorypublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

The Solheim Cup is a marathon not a sprint.

On Friday morning, Carlota Ciganda and Caroline Hedwall were sitting on grassy banks around greens cheering on their team-mates.

Hedwall continued taking up those positions that afternoon.

    Now look at them...

  15. Pettersen drinks it inpublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

After the clean sweep for the US on the first morning, who would have thought we'd be seeing scenes like this one come Sunday?

From 4-0 down to 14-14 against a high-class US side, Suzann Pettersen masterminded a phenomenal comeback.

  16. Hedwall heroics IIpublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

It was easy to miss at the time, among all the madness, but Caroline Hedwall won five of the last six holes to turn around her match.

That is world number 121 Caroline Hedwall - only Emily Pedersen at 122 is below her in the rankings among the 24 players - who was up against world 31 Ally Ewing.

Three down after 12, it looked like a match Europe could possibly start to forget about in terms of contributing to their effort.

Not so fast, said Caroline. She was absolutely inspired in the closing third of the match and Ewing will be bewildered at how she ended up losing.

She didn't play poorly, this was no gift; Hedwall tore that point from her grasp.

The scenes on the 17th a little earlier were simply sensational.

Carlota Ciganda's approach and the reaction, the winning putt and Suzann Petersen running over to those hugging the 16th hole then pushing the Spaniard front and centre to take all the acclaim.

  20. History madepublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

Europe 14-14 USA - Europe retain Solheim Cup

For the first time, Europe have lifted the Solheim Cup three times in a row, in what was a first-ever tied match in 18 meetings.

Two of the previous four meeting before this one had been won by just a single point - once by the USA in Germany in 2015 and once by Europe at Gleneagles in 2019.

The last Solheim Cup in 2021 also went right down to the wire when Europe just pipped the USA by two points in Ohio.

After the USA won four of the first five it's now a much more even contest, with hardly anything between the two sets of players - with tense, tight finishes now the norm. And we've got another one coming up next year!
