A truly extraordinary sight as 10,500 people do the YMCA inside the stadium. Scenes.

Actually they're not even cheerleaders on the pitch. It's the tournament volunteers in their bright pink shirts. The stands are bouncing.

Phenincx actually looked shocked herself that she had pulled that off. It has been so impressive from the Dutch. Eye-catching stuff.

There are some cheerleaders on the pitch at half-time getting the crowd going with a rendition of YMCA. The Ireland fans seem to be loving the occasion regardless of the score.

What a finish from Malou Phenincx! An absolute rocket. Fans of the English league will of course remember her spell playing indoor for East Grinstead. I don’t remember her doing anything like that, though.

Ireland have nothing to lose - they're already a credit to their nation.

They need to go out in the second half and show what they're made of. They need to be fearless and play their hockey - and not be intimidated by the Dutch.

Two goals in two minutes right at the end of that quarter for the Netherlands. Is it beyond Ireland now? It's going to require a huge effort in the final 30.

That was unbelievable from Malou Pheninckx. She took one step inside the circle and then unleashed a strike right into the roof of the net.

    Netherlands are cruising.

That’s rough on Ireland. Their first wave of penalty corner defence did its job but it fell kindly for Kitty Van Male. She doesn’t miss those. That’s why she’s the tournament’s top scorer.

The ball hits the Irish defender and rebounds to Kitty van Male who shoots high into the roof of the net.

The officials did well there to not blow when it hit an Irish boot and play advantage.

But you can't keep Kitty van Male down for long! Ireland make a good initial block at the penalty corner but Kitty van Male is there to gobble up the second opportunity. She slams it home. The Netherlands have one hand on the trophy.

Nicola Daly has been exceptional. She's got a bit between her teeth and she's leading by example.

Ireland just need to get to half-time without conceding another goal.

Shirley McCay's head rocks back after giving away another penalty corner. The ball rebounded up off her stick and into her arm...

Brilliant stop! Last-ditch stuff on the line by Roisin Upton. That looked a certain third goal.

  17. 'They need to out-Dutch the Dutch'published at 17:00 British Summer Time 5 August 2018

    Netherlands 2-0 Ireland

    Sally Walton

There's still a lot of time left in this first period - the experienced Irish players need to step up here. There have been too many unforced errors from Ireland.

They need to play more simple passes - play it to the first option you see - they need to out-Dutch the Dutch.

Ireland need to get on the ball now. Chasing it in this heat for 60 minutes is going to be a nightmare. Head coach Graham Shaw barks an order from the sidelines.

That second goal is a hammer blow for Ireland. A good save by McFerran but she couldn’t get the ball away from danger and that's what Kelly Jonker does. Her fifth goal of the tournament. Lovely finish.
