A 15-minute stewards' inquiry added to the suspense after a dramatic Gold Cup, which had been delayed by 10 minutes because of an injury to jockey Daryl Jacob. The result stood, but could potentially have been altered if stewards deemed the winner badly impeded his nearest rivals on the run-in.

Jockey David Casey, on the second horse On His Own, said he suffered interference from winner Lord Windermere veering into his path, telling the inquiry he would have won with a straight run. Russell responded by saying: "Without doubt, I am on the best horse in the race and I am never going to be passed the whole way."

Stewards' secretary Paul Barton acknowledged there was minor interference, but "on balance" did not think this had cost the runner-up victory.

An interesting subplot to the final race of the day is the fact that Barry Geraghty (Tanks For That) and Tom Scudamore (His Excellency) are still in contention for the top jockey award here at Cheltenham. If neither saddles a victory, the award will go to Ruby Walsh on countback.

Former jockey Luke Harvey: "I've known Jim Culloty, who trained Lord Windermere, for 20 years. He was a superb rider, won all the big races as a jockey. But this has been a red letter day for his training career.

"It was a break for him when he won the Kim Muir chase with Spring Heeled because before that you had to go back more than 200 days to find a winner. There were people doubting his ability as a trainer so this has been important for him."
