Winning jockey Leighton Aspell: "The price of 25-1 was fair. It's funny if you listen to the betting and people's opinion - last week he was touted and this week it was other horses and all the odds did this morning was drift.

"I always thought he had a genuine chance of placing in the first six."

Alvarado's trainer, Fergal O'Brien, was proud of his stable star, who was making his first appearance since pulling up at Cheltenham on New Year's Day and finished fourth.

"We're over the moon," he said. "It was a great effort to come back like that after the lay-off and all credit to the team for getting him here in such good form.

"Obviously we would love to come back and have another crack next year."

"National winning jockey Leighton Aspell, just like last year's on-board hero Ryan Mania, had actually retired from racing before having second thoughts. 'I had a bad month or two,' he has just told the assembled media. 'I was a bit low. But within 12 months I realised I had unfinished business.'"

Winning jockey Leighton Aspell: "It's a wonderful feeling - he did tire but they all do and Richard [Newland, trainer] has his horses very fit. I had enough confidence to know that even if he did tire we could hang on.

"From Becher's it was a slow run race and I could sit very solidly in my position. Luckily all the fallers were to the left or the right of me.

"Once we set out on the second circuit it was a stable race and I rode it steadily, I could feel a few on our heels but was aware that I needed just to keep in front and not to race him too hard.

"When you turn round and see all your friends and connections it's a great feeling."

  7. Long Runpublished at 17:19 British Summer Time 5 April 2014

Long Run's owner, Robert Waley-Cohen, revealed his charge had suffered a minor injury during the race: "The horse has got a bit of a haematoma on his shoulder. It's a very minor injury. It's like a big bruise. Otherwise, he's OK.

"He didn't go very far and he pulled himself up."

AP McCoy, who finished third on Double Seven: "Martin [Brassil] had the horse in great form, but the ground was a fraction dead for him. Jumping the third-last I thought I had a chance of winning, but then I think the dead ground found him out.

"Dr Newland and Leighton are nice people and it's great for them to win it."
