Trainer Richard Fahey will be a happy chappy when he goes to bed tonight.

His horse, Ribchester, powered home to take the Queen Anne Stakes, the first race of the day.

"It was a good race to watch", the Irishman told BBC Radio Berkshire. "I always felt comfortable watching him".

"We've got another ten or 12 runners, Ribchester was the big one for us, but we do have a few little squeaks during the week too".

  4. Cox: We have more champions to comepublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 20 June 2017

    Adam Whitty
    BBC South

Royal Ascot 2016 was a special one for trainer Clive Cox.

His horse Profitable took the King’s Stand Stakes on the opening day and then 24 hours later My Dream Boat came home in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

A special 48 hours, underlining his incredible 42% strike-rate in the royal meeting’s Group Ones since 2010.

Profitable will hope to defend his King's Stand Stakes title today, while My Dream Boat could pick up another victory on Saturday.

But the Berkshire-based trainer isn't relying on his big guns.

"We've got some nice ones coming along behind as well, among those would be Harry Angel and 'Tis Marvellous.

"We've got 100 horses here on the go, so I hope there's a few more stars among them".

Ascot opener goes to Godolphinpublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 20 June 2017

Favourite Ribchester, ridden by William Buick for trainer Richard Fahey, gave owners Godolphin the opening win of the 2017 Royal Ascot meeting.

The 11-10 chance won the Queen Anne Stakes in a course record for the straight mile - 40 years to the day since Godolphin chief Sheikh Mohammed celebrated his first winner as an owner.

It brought a much-needed lift for his team, which saw chief executive John Ferguson step down recently after a deterioration in relations with trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

Michelle Payne, the only female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup, was fifth of the 16 runners on 66-1 outsider Kaspersky as the rider made her Ascot debut.
