What an opening day we have had.

A stunning treble for jockey Frankie Dettori and trainer John Gosden.

We will see you tomorrow to do it all again, as we jump and clench our way into day two.

  2. Raise a glass to Frankiepublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

As Monarchs Glen crossed the line, Frankie Detorri raised his thumb and two fingers up to the crowd, having won his third race of the day.

It puts him in a formidable position already to be the leading jockey of the meeting, as he continues his success at this famous racecourse.

The actual Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, was watching her horse, Fabricate, on the big screen in the parade ring. Unfortunately, it got swallowed up by the pack in the later stages, which means Her Majesty will have to wait for another Ascot winner.

And so to Tuesday’s concluding contest, the Wolferton Stakes (17:35 BST) which provided a 25-1 shock in the shape of Snoano last year.

Victory for Sir Michael Stoute with Mirage Dancer would make him the meeting's all-time leading trainer.

Stoute currently stands on 75 winners - tied with the late, great Sir Henry Cecil.

  6. Mullins wins again, and takes third, fourth and fifthpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

It is another triumph for Willie Mullins, with Lagostovegas, ridden by Andrea Atzeni, giving him his fourth win in the race in the last seven years.

The Irish trainer also picked up third, fourth and fifth in the Ascot Stakes.

Lagostovegas is a dual horse, running during both the flat and jump seasons because of the increased stamina required for this long race. The mare showed it had plenty of gas in the tank to push on over the last couple of furlongs.

The Ascot Stakes (17:00) is where trainers more associated with jump racing try to capture a prize at the big flat race meeting.

Willie Mullins has managed to do just that three times in the last six years, including with Thomas Hobson in 2017, and saddles leading contender Stratum.

Mullins also saddles Lagostovegas, Meri Devie, Whiskey Sour and Chelkar.

Craig Revel Horwood will be presenting the trophy for the Ascot Stakes this afternoon, something he is relishing.

    Craig Revel Horwood

He added: "I'm going to put on a fiver on the colours that I like, because I know nothing about the racing."

Mr Revel Horwood said he missed Bruce Forsyth, who was a regular here, saying he "was just so wonderful and an amazing person to work with".

Frankie Dettori is synomonous with Ascot, where he rode his famous 'Magnificent Seven' in 1996.

And the 47-year-old was at his brilliant best as he sealed a Royal Ascot opening day double for trainer John Gosden on Without Parole in the St James's Palace Stakes.

The 9-4 favourite Without Parole is a son of the legendary Frankel, who won the race seven years ago.

Much of the talk before the King's Stand Stakes had been about the clash between Lady Aurelia and Battaash, but it was Blue Point - under William Buick - who came out on top.

Victory continued the renaissance for Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin team, and particularly trainer Charlie Appleby, who won the Derby at Epsom earlier this month with the Buick-ridden Masar.

Blink and you’ll miss it – we have the speedsters next, a five-furlong dash in the King’s Stand Stakes (15:40).

Lady Aurelia lines up again for American trainer Wesley Ward after last year’s victory in 57.45 seconds almost broke the course record. She is seeking a third straight victory at the Royal meeting.

Fierce competition is set to come from Temple Stakes winner Baattash, trained by Charlie Hills.

  20. Royal Ascot now a 'major international event'published at 15:29 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

The Royal meeting always used to be a British festival of racing, but that has changed recently.

Horses from 12 countries have competed at the event since 2000, with 10 winners from the United States and 98 from Ireland.

Lady Aurelia, and trainer Wesley Ward, will hope to be drinking from the bucket of victory again this year

Four countries are represented at this year's event (Ireland, United States, France and Australia).

"Since the nineties, Ascot has become a major international event", said the BBC's Cornelius Lysaght.

He added: "The one to watch out for is Lady Aurelia from the USA, who has won at the last two Royal Ascots. She will go for the big sprint on the first day, the Kings Stand Stakes."
