  5. What's new this year?published at 10:52 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

There have been a few notable changes for punters heading to Ascot this year.

    • Extra security measures are in place, one of which could mean racegoers being breathalysed before entry - and barred - if officials believe they're intoxicated after fighting at some courses this year (including Ascot).
    • The dress code remains much the same, but it has been stipulated men must wear socks that "should cover the ankle".
    • Bardot necklines have been banned from the Royal Enclosure, as have fascinators.

A slightly more sedentary arrival this year to the race, with racegoers strolling in rather than the usual run through the turnstyles.

Either way, Royal Ascot is officially under way.

  8. Big day one for Dettoripublished at 10:28 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

In a football-dominated year when Royal Ascot could do with hitting the ground running in order to grab any sporting headlines, the combination of trainer John Gosden and jockey Frankie Dettori could well ride to the rescue.

To be fair that applies throughout the week – they have Cracksman on Wednesday – but a couple of Dettori flying dismounts after wins for Calyx (15:05 BST) and Without Parole (16:20) would do just the trick on day one.

Calyx really dazzled on his debut, while Without Parole is sure to improve for his successful run last time, which came following a setback. Lady Aurelia will be hard to beat in the King’s Stand Stakes (15:40) in which fellow US challenger Bucchero is expected to go well at fancy odds.
