If you're not familiar with Annie Power - she fell at the final hurdle of this race four years ago. Ruby Walsh was also the jockey that day, although the pair went on to win the Champion Hurdle 12 months later...

On Benie Des Dieux's fall at the last: "Wow - it was like deja vu with Annie Power. The race was at her mercy. Knuckled over and gave away the race. The similarities to the tumble taken by Annie Power was madness."

Benie Des Dieux clipped the top of the fence and went south, bringing yelps and screams from plenty in the stands. Thankfully we're hearing the horse is fine, while Ruby Walsh appears to be walking fine.

    Wow. Incredible drama.

Derek 'Tommo' Thompson is a roving reporter for BBC Radio 5 live.

Last year he managed to get Rod Stewart to serenade his wife Penny Lancaster live on air.

He likes a good sing and Derek's 'good thing' is Benie Des Dieux (16.10).

"If Ruby Walsh says it's his best ride of the week who am I to disagree?" he says."

  13. Can Benie Des Dieux do it for Ruby?published at 16:08 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2019

    Mares' Hurdle (16:10 GMT)

Twelve months ago, Benie Des Dieux caused a surprise with victory in this race and she is favourite to claim back-to-back wins.

Although she hasn't raced since last April, the eight-year-old (whose name translates as Blessed Gods) is trained by Willie Mullins, who is bidding to win the race for the 10th time in 12 runnings, thanks mainly to Quevega's six wins from 2009-2014.

Jockey Ruby Walsh has already nominated her as his best chance of the Festival while Mullins' son and assistant Patrick says the reason she hasn't run already this season is because of the ground.

Of her rivals, stablemate Limini could challenge and Lady Buttons has impressed so far this season.

  17. Did anyone back the tricast?published at 15:59 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2019

    Espoir D'Allen wins Champion Hurdle

Drama everywhere in the Champion Hurdle and punters are watching the replays with something approaching wide-eyed astonishment.

Gavin Cromwell, trainer of winner Espoir D'Allen, is a former farrier for Gordon Elliott, trainer of beaten favourite Apple's Jade, and not too many would have thought Cromwell's 16-1 shot was a shoe-in.

In fact a £1 tricast on Espoir D'Allen, Melon (20-1) and Silver Streak (80-1) in the correct order would have netted you a cool £22,067.60.

Racing fan and renowned model Elizabeth Hurley is on hand to present the prizes.

Maybe she will get them a free bottle of Estee Lauder too.

    Espoir D'Allen wins Champion Hurdle

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Trainer Nicky Henderson on Buveur D'Air, who fell at the third hurdle: "What can you do. We have to take these things on the chin. We have to go back to square one.

"When you're jumping like he does with only an inch of margin, you're dangerously low. The margin of error is so small.

"JP's won in the end anyway so I'm thrilled for him but he must have felt the same when Buveur D'Air went down.

"He seemed in such good form but that's Cheltenham for you, I guess."
