'I couldn't be happier' with Grand National champion Tiger Roll - trainer Elliott

Last year's winner Tiger Roll is back to defend his title, hoping to become the first horse to land back-to-back Nationals since Red Rum in 1973 and 1974.

Trainer Gordon Elliott believes he has had better preparation than he had before the 2018 race.

"But it is the Grand National, you have more than four miles to go and a lot of fences to jump and 40 other horses to take on, so the best horse does not always win," he added in an interview with BBC Sport.

    26 February 1839, Aintree.

Seventeen riders collect near the route of the modern-day Melling Road for the first running of the Grand National.

Lottery, the 5-1 favourite, came home first, but the best post-race quotes come from Captain Martin Becher, rider of Conrad.

Dumped in a small brook by mount Conrad at the sixth, he was asked about the experience.

"I didn't know how dreadful water tastes without whisky in it", he said.
