Allegorie De Vassy leads the charge for Willie Mullins in the penultimate race of the day.

She has won all four races since joining Mullins' yard, scoring twice over hurdles last season.

The Colm Murphy-trained Impervious will be the main competitor, pulling off an impressive win at Punchestown in January and, like Allegorie De Vassy is unbeaten over fences in three runs.

Other shouts include the Gavin Cromwell-trained Jeremys Flame and Magic Daze, although stamina could be an issue for the latter.

For racing this has been a time of huge positivity and one they should bask in as a job well done.

  19. Is horse racing right to crack down on the whip?published at 16:36 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2023

    The Sports Desk

It’s one of the highlights of the racing calendar but much of the build-up to this year’s Cheltenham Festival centred on controversy over one piece of a rider’s kit: the whip.

So, are new restrictions over its use a necessary step to protect horse welfare and improve the sport’s image?

Or, are they an over-the-top reaction to a non-existent problem that’s forcing riders to reinvent their techniques at the peak of the jump racing season?

Former Gold Cup-winning jockey Andrew Thornton argues that whip use is "not a welfare issue", while Roly Owers, the CEO of World Horse Welfare, insists that the whip should only be used for safety and training, not to encourage a horse.
