Peter Hickman: "I'll do what I normally do - enjoy msyelf! It's been a fantastic week for myself but I've only done two laps on this full superbike, now I've got to do six.

    "Fingers crossed she'll be alright."

Peter Hickman pushed the lap record past the 135mph mark last year. I'd be surprised if we get there again after the weather delays this fortnight - but I'm often surprised at the TT!

  4. Tension mountingpublished at 10:05 British Summer Time 7 June 2019

    Richard Petrie
BBC Sport NI at the Isle of Man TT

As the riders and bikes head out onto the grid to the most famous piece of tarmac in international road racing there is a palpable sense of tension, nerves and excitement in the air. Conditions are just about perfect.

For most of these riders this is THE most important race in their calendar - a unique annual experience.

It's the ultimate test of man and machine - 226 miles of road racing at its very rawest, racing between lamp-posts, stone walls, hedges, trees and all the other furniture associated with a public roads circuit.

Public roads used for the rest of the year by the everyday traffic, for the work commute, for the school run, inhabited by tractors, buses and lorries.

All these racers are regarded as heroes just for taking part in the race on this most challenging and demanding of courses where there is little or no room for error and the 'kudos' for successful manufacturers is huge.

A reminder/refresher for any new fans dialling in: The riders set off in 10-second intervals, then it's six laps of the 37.7 mile course, fastest rider around the course wins.

There will be pit stops at the end of every second lap...

The sense of anticipation has been mounting in the TT paddock from early on this morning - the 40,000 plus crowd of spectators around the circuit being swelled by the ranks of Manx residents for whom today is a public holiday.

The merchandise stalls and food and drink facilities have been doing a roaring trade all fortnight while team technicians have been meticulously making final checks to machine preparations before the bikes are pit through scrutineering.

The sound of bikes being warmed up rings in the air - the roads are closed. Everyone's ready. Poised.

There's nothing like the nervous tension on Glencrutchery Road before a race.

Remember we get away at 10:15 BST.

Harrison hoping to break Hickman domination

Dean Harrison is in danger of becoming the 'nearly man' of the TT.

The Bradford rider finished second to Peter Hickman in a thrilling Senior TT last year and this year he has come runner-up to the Lincolnshire rider in not one, not two, but three races - the Superbike, Supersport race two and Superstock.

Harrison is also the second fastest man ever around the Mountain Course behind Hickman but does have two TT race wins to his name and could go close to a third today on his Silicone Engineering Kawasaki.

The smart money is probably on Hickman just retaining the upper hand though.

  13. RIP Daleypublished at 09:50 British Summer Time 7 June 2019

    Daley MathisonImage source, Pacemaker

And unfortunately this year has seen another death at the TT - we lost Daley Mathison during Monday's Superbike race.

Mathison, of Stockton-on-Tees, crashed at Snugborough, near Union Mills, and was described as a "bright star" who was "taken too young".

A spokesman for the German Penz13.com team said the 27-year-old was "an amazing person who greatly enriched our team. He will be sadly missed".

He had started 19 TT races and achieved three podium finishes.

Road racing is as brutal as it is brilliant.

  15. Postpublished at 09:45 British Summer Time 7 June 2019

We saw lap records tumble in every class in 2018 as we were blessed with perfect weather and the riders could get in lap after lap of practice.

That has NOT been the case this year at all. In fact, this race is scheduled for the full six laps before more rain comes in after lunch. And some of these riders will have barely managed that many all week.

A test for rider and machine today.

  16. Ultimate motorsport thrillpublished at 09:43 British Summer Time 7 June 2019

The Isle of Man TT is an event steeped in history and heritage with the names of heroes past and present being revered and readily tripping off the tongue of generations of fans. Riders like Geoff Duke, Mike Hailwood, Giacomo Agostini, Joey Dunlop. John McGuinness and nowadays Peter Hickman.

And then there's the thrill of watching trackside. And I mean trackside. Where else in the world do you get to see some of the world's most exotic bikes blast past just a few feet away at speeds of up to 200mph? A unique, breathtaking, exhilarating experience by any standards.
