    Q2: England 20-19 New Zealand

Seconds on the clock as New Zealand win the ball back and have the chance to draw level with around 10 seconds to go in this second quarter. Can they do it?

  2. 'England not as sharp as normal at the post'published at 10:44 British Summer Time 5 August 2023

    Anna Stanley
Former New Zealand captain on BBC TV

You look at the attempts at goal, England's 25 to New Zealand's 16 so far.

It just goes to show you how much the Ferns are struggling to get the ball down the court.

Also we can see that the shooting isn't as sharp as we are used to from the Roses.

    Q2: England - New Zealand

Less than two minutes on the clock as Nat Metcalf and Phoenix Karaka tussle for the ball on the edge of the D.

We are seeing a lot of balls being put on the floor but that was a clean pick-up from Metcalf and Helen Housby rewards.

    No toss up required. Phew.

    Q2: England 19-16 New Zealand

Another wayward pass from Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Layla Guscoth is alert to get the tip on to Geva Mentor.

England are still struggling with that urgency in attack. They're really having to work that ball around and be patient, waiting for the gap to open up for the shooters.

Here's how Geva Mentor's stunning defensive work in the first quarter set up an England attack...

    Q2: England 17-15 New Zealand

Or not. Another miss from Eleanor Cardwell.

England have had 23 attempts on goal to New Zealand's 15. The difference is that the Silver Ferns have nailed all of their shots and we're seeing quite a lot of uncharacteristic misses from that shooting combination of Cardwell and Helen Housby.

New Zealand head coach Noeline Taurua speaking to BBC TV:

"Definitely happy with the start. I think we got pinned quite a bit and got caught on the obstruction, would be good to tidy that up a little bit. But definitely a good ebb and flow [to the game].

"We tried to put those balls into the circle, those high balls, and we are getting it off the defence, so it we'll have to see what that brings.

"Hopefully not soon, but we will make some changes at some point. But we are still in the fight so let's see what happens."

    Q2: England 15-13 New Zealand

Helen Housby misses the shot but Eleanor Cardwell snatches the rebound before it goes out of play and sinks the shot with one hand. That should give her some confidence.

The Roses have a very slim lead.

    Q2: England 13-11 New Zealand

    Another miss from Eleanor Cardwell.

That's her third one. She takes the rebound, though, and puts the next one up. There's definitely some psychology coming into play, here. The England shooters are currently at 76%.

  10. 'England need to adapt to New Zealand physicality in circle'published at 10:33 British Summer Time 5 August 2023

    Ama Agbeze
Former England captain on BBC TV

England's drop in shooting accuracy - 71% compared to New Zealand's 100% - is down to the intense pressure the Ferns' defence is applying to the England attackers.

Initially Cardwell and Housby were struggling to get space in the circle, but that was improving as the quarter went on.

It is just about adapting to the style of play.

    Q2: England 11-10 New Zealand

The instensity from both sides has been upped.

Silver Ferns coach Noeline Taurua is currently talking to the commentary team and during that conversation we had three turnover, poor Noels.

It's Maia Wilson who eventually gets the shot away to keep her side within one.

    Q2: England 9-9 New Zealand

Away we go in the second quarter.

No changes from either side to report.

  13. 'Need to improve centre pass conversions'published at 10:29 British Summer Time 5 August 2023

    Serena Kersten
Commonwealth gold medallist with England on BBC Sport

It was a steady first quarter.

What was interesting was our centre pass conversion, England could have gotten a few more goals.

The other day Fran Williams made the point that every pass and every ball counts, so that is something that they will be looking to tidy up going into the second quarter.

    Q1: England 9-9 New Zealand

Noeline Taurua dishing out the instructions on the bench to her Silver Ferns.

She doesn't take any messing about but she seems fairly relaxed right now.

  15. End of Q1published at 10:26 British Summer Time 5 August 2023

    Q1: England 9-9 New Zealand

Seconds on the clock for New Zealand to draw level and Ameliaranne Ekenasio nails the shot under the post under pressure.

That was hard work for both sides but we're all square after 15 minutes.

  16. 'Great defensive effort from England so far'published at 10:25 British Summer Time 5 August 2023

    Anna Stanley
Former New Zealand captain on BBC TV

Again the Roses are doing a great job, pushing the Silver Ferns from side to side.

    Q1: England 8-8 New Zealand

    Geva Mentor you beauty.

Some lovely defensive pressure from England and Silver Ferns captain Amerliaranne Ekenasio passes straight into the hands of veteran Mentor.

She will pick those up all day long. Back on level terms in the final minute of the opening quarter.

  18. 'Fabulous from Guscoth'published at 10:23 British Summer Time 5 August 2023

    Pamela Cookey
    Former England shooter

Fabulous defensive pressure from Layla Guscoth.

Getting up nice and high, and gets the tip to put the ball back in the Roses hands.

Great work from the England goal defence!

  19. Postpublished at 10:23 British Summer Time 5 August 2023

    Q1: England 6-8 New Zealand

Oh well done Layla Guscoth. It's crowded in that defensive circle but she leaps highest to get the tip and England have the chance to claw something back here.

Bit of patience required but Eleanor Cardwell sinks the shot eventually.

  20. Postpublished at 10:21 British Summer Time 5 August 2023

    Q1: England 5-8 New Zealand

Is it just me or are both teams playing with fire with the three second rule?

Laura Malcolm spots Eleanor Cardwell in the circle and goes for the long pass but overcooks it and New Zealand have a slim advantage.

Remember, it was New Zealand who beat England in the World Cup semi-finals four years ago on their way to winning the title.
