    Men's single sculls, heat four

Great Britain's Alan Campbell is safely through to the quarter-finals of the singles sculls, winning his heat in 7.08.31.

Harder races to come for him and the replays show that the water is chopping up nastily in the wind.

Could be survival of the fittest by the time we get to the latter stages.

Four years ago, the British team failed to put Mark Cavendish into a position to win the men's road race at London 2012.

The general consensus was that the rest of the world colluded to prevent a GB victory.

This time around the team of five, comprising Ian Stannard, Adam Yates, Steve Cummings, Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome.

Froome might not necessarily be the lead rider. After getting caught out in London, Great Britain are coming with plans B to Z to cover all eventualities.

Froome will get a cleaner shot at a medal away from today's chaos in Wednesday's time trial.

Right, Great Britain's Alan Campbell in lane number five in heat four. He leads at the halfway mark by more than four seconds.

One of the men he is up against is Indonesia's Memo Memo.

Coach Boudewijn van Opstal identified him as a potential talent on a scouting trip in Maluku Islands, Indonesia.

The scenery is absolutely jaw-dropping. Impossible to get blase about the backdrop.

Great Britain's Jen McIntosh needs to be in the top eight shooters in the qualification round to book her place in the final.

With 53 shooters blasting away, it is difficult to keep track of who is closest to making that cut off.

She is 24th at the moment, but still has a series to go.

Jhonatan Esquivel (no typo) of Uruguay joins them in the next round with third.

Unfortunately for Vanuatu rowing fans, Luigi Teilemb comes bottom of the six-man pile in heat one - but India's Dattu Baban makes it through to the quarter-finals, along with Juan Carlos Cabrera of Mexico and Cuba's Angel Fournier Rodriguez.

Remember - first three go through to the next round, the rest drop into the repechage.

The first men's heat in the men's single sculls comprises a first Olympic rowing entry for Vanuata, a Pacific island near to Fiji, in the name of Luigi Teilemb.

There is also a rower from India, Dattu Baban Bhokanal, who has overcome a fear of water to learn his trade.

That's what the Olympics is all about, isn't it?

Bhokanal has just finished third to reach the quarter-finals, whereas Teilemb finished last but was cheered all the way home.

Alan Campbell is coming down in a couple of heats' time - and if he's not ahead of that field there's something seriously wrong.

Rowing kicks us offpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 6 August 2016

    Men's and women's heats from 12:30 BST

So, the rowing kicks us off today - which is good if you're a Team GB fan.

Great Britain has won rowing gold at every Olympics since 1984, and that streak should be continued in Rio. You would put your houseboat on Helen Glover and Heather Stanning winning the women’s pair, while British gold in the men’s four has become something of an Olympic tradition. Kind of.

Alan Campbell is the first Brit to go out - he'll be stretching his oars in heat 4 of the men's single sculls from about 13:00 BST.

How does it work? The first three make it through to the quarter-finals, the rest drop down to the repechage.

The first medal of the Games will arrive in shooting and hence it's an early dart for the 5 live team who kindly gave me a ride.

Great Britain's Jen McIntosh is the first Briton to bid for a medal at this Games in the 50m rifle. It's unlikely the Scot will threaten the podium but you've got to be in it to win it.

I'll be there to keep an eye on it, then it's over to GB v Brazil in women's sevens, a match which should be packed with atmosphere and one in which GB have to win against a well-supported but ultimately very beatable side.

First up on the regatta platter this morning is Alan Campbell.

By making Rio, the 33-year-old becomes the first sportsperson from Northern Ireland to compete in four Olympic Games.

His bronze at London 2012 was Britain’s first Olympic medal in the single scull since 1928.

His best days might be behind him, but he is at home in Rio. His father-in-law was born and raised there and he says that it is second-favourite city behind London.

A proposed rifle emoji representing the sport of shooting was barred from the Olympic-themed symbols released in June.

Unicode, the organisation in charge of selecting emojis, also rejected a modern pentathlon image because it depicts a man holding a pistol. A generic handgun emoji remains available.

Apple have turned the handgun emoji to a waterpistol in its latest IoS release.
