  1. Queue issues a 'powder keg'?published at 14:46 British Summer Time 6 August 2016

There's a fair few reports of long queues around Olympic Park, and Brazilian journalist Breno Pires is claiming that x-ray machines have been turned off to try and cut down "two hour" waiting times.

Pires describes the situation as a "powder keg" at a "mega event full of risks".

Bernardo Cruz says "fans are losing a long time in line, and giving up on getting there".

Andre Linares says "huge queue in front of the Olympic Park. Many with tickets will hardly see Brazil in the handball".

If you're watching the men's road race and finding your gaze drifting towards those waves lapping the shore, you may be a surfing fan in the making.

You'll have to wait to show your Olympic colours though.

Surfing is one of the five sports added for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo - and here is why it's a perfect fit.

Team GB women just got off the bus right in front of me and I managed to have a glare into a few eyes.

Some had headphones on and looked ultra focused, some carried fruit, there were a couple of smiles but you could sense the fact that they know this is a day they've been building for.

Brazil, who they meet at 1600 BST, are the lowest ranked side here. The conditions are absolutely sweltering but GB should hammer through this ahead of meeting Japan again later today.

Just 14 minute matches but my word they'll sweat today.

The first gold medal of Rio 2016 is up for grabs.

China's Yi Siling won the first gold of London 2012 in the event and she looks well set to double up here.

The world record holder leads the field after three of eight rounds. American Virginia Thrasher leads the chase.

No response from the golfer yet, or his ex-fiancée Caroline Wozniacki. But it's worth noting that the Danish tennis star is smiling a little less broadly than Barnes here.

McIlroy pulled out of the Olympics because of fears over the Zika virus.

No race radios in today's race so we are going back to the old school.

Steve Cummings drifts back to the team car to discuss with Great Britain race director Rod Ellingworth how its is going so far.

Perhaps Ellingworth is telling him to rev up the peloton, stop playing silly beggars and start the chase on the six-strong breakaway, who have opened up a lead of eight minutes.

Spain and Italy are massing at the front of the pack already to up the pace.

Colombia's Jarilson Patano Gomez, Germany's SImon Geschke, Swiss Michael Albasini, Russia's Pavel Kochetkov, Norway's Sven Erik Bystrom and Poland's Michal Kwiatkowski are the men up front.

Great Britain have been very cagey about their tactics in the build-up to today, and rightly so. Ian Stannard is probably the only one in there to do the grunt work. Apart from him, every member is legitimately capable of winning this race.

Adam Yates had a marvellous Tour de France - winner of the white jersey - and he could be a dark horse.

Breakaway gets clearpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 6 August 2016

    Men's road race - 208km to go

    We have our first breakaway.

A group of six have gone off the front and opened up a lead of more than four minutes on the peloton.

Colombia's Jarilson Patano Gomez, Germany's SImon Geschke, Swiss Michael Albasini, Russia's Pavel Kochetkov, Norway's Sven Erik Bystrom and Poland's Michal Kwiatkowski are the men involved.

The rest of the field look supremely unbothered, rolling the pedals very gently behind and confident of reeling them in.

If you went into any pub in Yorkshire around the time of London 2012, you'd hear somebody tell you how their home county was a sporting heavyweight. The graphic below kind of underlines the point.

This time around in Rio, the white rose will be rooting for Nicola Adams, the Brownlee brothers and, of course, Jess Ennis-Hill. More on that here.

Dutch rider Tom Dumoulin fractured his wrist in a crash in the Tour de France, but still was determined to make the startline at Rio.

He has been a bit less determined to reach the finish however.

He has hopped out of the saddle and retired, keeping his powder dry for the time trial in which he has an excellent chance of a medal.

After days of just being among the world's media, thinking we'd been been duped into participating in some sort of Truman Show, the Olympic Park is now awash with colour and people.

I think I can hear a vuvuzela-like sound in the distance, and yellow Brazilian football shirts are ubiquitous.

But there are people from all over the world, like these group of Turkish fans who have come to watch judo. The Olympics are truly under way.
