Is the red-haired chap, holding the trophy in this photo, the most famous Englishman in Fiji?

Ben Ryan, from London, is head coach of the rugby-mad nation's sevens side and hopes to lead them to a first Olympic medal.

"I can't go to the supermarket in the capital, it's hundreds of photographs and selfies," he told BBC Radio 5 live.

  4. Are you watching world?published at 23:13 British Summer Time 5 August 2016

Under an hour to go now. An estimated three billion people will watch the ceremony, which has taken five years to produce and includes 300 dancers, 5,000 volunteers and 12,000 costumes.

Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen and Briton Dame Judi Dench are confirmed to have roles in the production before the 207 competing teams take part in the Parade of Nations.

Bond, the Bard, As Time Goes By. The Olympics.

Dench ticks another box off the list.

The Maracana is historic, fixed, constant, a beacon of pride for this country.

But scattered around Olympic venues you will see a healthy smattering of temporary structures. These monstrosities, comprising thousands of bits of scaffolding aren't too easy on the eye. From beach volleyball at Copacabana to hockey in Deodoro, they are in use.

Today workmen were still putting things in place. While billions enjoy the ceremony, I think hundreds of people across venues are going to spend the night finishing things off. Still, there is work to do.

A couple of votes for this guy.

Oscar Schmidt, all 6ft 8in (and a bit) of him, is apparently the unofficial highest points scorer in basketball history. We're not entirely sure why it's unofficial.

Remarkably, he played between 1973 and 2004, scoring 49,737 points for Brazil and clubs in his homeland, Spain and Italy.

    He's now 58.

If he slam dunks the flame, NBA Jam style, I'm all for it.

    'He's on fiiireeee!'

The ceremony is just over an hour away from beginning now ladies and gentlemen. I can't reveal too much, but expect environmental issues to play a key part. No Brunels anywhere as far as I can tell.

And Sir Paul McCartney is not singing Hey Jude at any stage.

Night falling in Rio, and the Maracana stadium filling up slowly as buses disgorge spectators, media and athletes in the streets around. A collective sense of relief that after all the problems in the build-up - presidents impeached, budgets sliced, stadiums finished late, doping scandals revealed - the reason for it all is at last ready to begin.

Reuters are reporting that former tennis player Gustavo Kuerten will be the man to light the cauldron - although there's no official word yet.

Kuerten is a three-time French Open winner (1997, 2000, 2001) and was world number one in early 2000 - this was very much before the power triumvirate of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

The 39-year-old has scaled back his trademark curls a tad - possibly in fear of them catching aflame from the torch.
