Rowing postponement justifiedpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 7 August 2016

The decision to postpone the rowing today appears justified, according to a few fans I've been speaking to.

Since organisers called the day off, the wind has really increased and crews training on the lagoon have all come in now.

I spoke to supporters from the United States, Great Britain and Brazil and they all accept that rowing cannot continue in these conditions. The only worry for friends and family from further afield is that it could affect when the finals are re-scheduled, something a flight booking might not have taken into account.

With some crews yet to get on the water, that prospect is still a way off, and we are expected to hear more from organisers at 16:15 BST.

This Brazilian gang said they've been told their tickets will be valid for another day.

The rowing's been cancelled, play on the outside tennis courts has been delayed... and for this member of Great Britain's track cycling team, time to get the washing in.

Not to be for Great Britain's Laurence Halsted who loses 15-9 to China's Asian Games medallist Haiwei Chen, but he was happy with the experience ahead of the team event later in the Games.

"Obviously I would have like to go further today," he tells me. "The focus for me though has always been on the team event since I returned to the sport a few years ago and we've beaten all the teams who are here so that gives us a lot of confidence."

Meanwhile, James-Andrew Davis - who earlier won through to the last-16, faces a tough task to progress further.

He's up against current European and former world champion Timur Safin of Russia at around 16:30 BST.

"I absolutely support it. We definitely, definitely shouldn't be racing in these conditions. Well done, FISA," he said.

This gives you an idea of what heights we are hitting on the Beaufort Scale.

We just went Facebook live, external from Deodoro where Tina Cook told us how the heat will concern riders in today's Eventing.

Jonathan Agnew gave us an insight into his first huge commentating challenge at Equestrian and we even met Formula 1 royalty in Lee McKenzie.

Serious stuff now, Pippa Funnell is first up for GB at 15:20 BST. Remember these riders are competing in individual Eventing but the points go towards the team medal event too.

Britain lead individually with William Fox-Pitt and they are third in the team competition. Equestrian delivered five medals in 2012 and has had around £16m in funding since.

There's nothing quite like being in an Olympic arena to make you feel as if you've been sucked into an 80s computer game. The stadium MC's boxing-style announcements are exactly the same, the crowd's atmospheric during play similar.

Anyway. France fans outnumbering British fans at the judo, waving flags, tooting horns, chanting, as their man Kilian Le Bouch took on Colin Oates (how many Colins are competing in Rio?).

Needless to say, they enjoyed the result. There are empty seats at the judo but, as with many events, there's still a wonderful atmosphere.

Yesterday saw William Fox-Pitt take the individual lead in the eventing dressage with a brilliant performance only 10 months after being placed in an induced coma following a fall.

Today, Pippa Funnell is the third British athlete to go - Gemma Tattersall is in 15th - at about 15:20 BST, with Kitty King to follow at 18:58.

Breakfast time is done and dusted in Brazil and day two is now well and truly under way, with a total of 14 medals on offer.

Adam Peaty, Michael Phelps and Andy Murray are among the names who will feature later on but what can you look forward to over the next few hours?

    • Shooting (15:00) – the first medals of the day will be decided in the women’s 10m air pistol
    • Cycling (16:30) - GB’s Lizzie Armitstead hopes to banish talk of missed doping tests with a medal in the road race
    • Swimming (17:00) - Controversial Russian Yulia Efimova is among those in the early session of heats
    • Gymnastics (18:30) – Britain’s women will try to qualify for the team final

GB's Oates outpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 7 August 2016

Bit of a disappointment this one.

Britain's Colin Oates was expected to go deep into the -66kg competition, although a medal would have been a bonus.

The Commonwealth Games champion has lost to France's Kilian Le Blouch. The pair failed to register any attacking points and it went to golden score, with Oates losing by committing a shido - or foul.

That follows Ashley McKenzie's exit yesterday.

What an absolute performance from Oksana Chusovitina there, you can hear the crowd reacting.

She was at the Olympic Games before some of these gymnasts were even there.

Chusovitina, 41, is performing in her seventh Olympics and has represented three countries at Olympic level.

She won team gold at Barcelona 1992 with the Unified Team (made up of former Soviet states), is representing her native Uzbekistan here, as she did in 1996, 2000 and 2004, while she appeared for Germany in 2008 and 2012.

Just casting an eye over the Eventing standings and I'm drawn to Nicolas Lionel Wettstein of Ecuador.

Most eventing athletes are professional and well backed. He however earns his living in sales for a pharmaceutical company and juggles it with his passion.

"I have two lives and no time for anything else," he says. "The Games are my vacation."

He's 27th after day one. This will look good alongside 'sales rep' on the old CV.

At least stick it on your LinkedIn, Nicolas. It is currently an Olympic-free zone.

    Sir Steve Redgrave
Five-time Olympic rowing champion on BBC TV

The Olympic Games isn't chosen on its rowing course. It would very unlikely that Fisa - rowing's governing body - would have chosen this.

We have to make do in some ways. That's the situation for our showpiece event every four years. But outdoor sports are affected by the weather - we have to deal with it. And safety comes first. Fairness comes after that. It's unrowable.

In Athens in 1896, the whole rowing programme was cancelled. But that would be a disaster.
