First up on the water today for Great Britain is Northern Ireland's Alan Campbell. A bronze medallist at London 2012, he goes in the fourth and final quarter-final of the single sculls.

New Zealand's Mahe Drysdale and Czech Ondrej Synek are the two favourites for the class and have already slugged it out side by side in the second heat.

  12. Russians compare cupping to dopingpublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 9 August 2016

    CuppingImage source, Reuters

Russian state-owned rolling news channel Rossiya 24 has broadcast an "expose" on the use of cupping therapy amongst US Olympic athletes, comparing the practice to the use of meldonium, a banned substance whose widespread use in Russia led to a number of Russian athletes being banned from competing in this year's games.

The report, headlined "like meldonium, only legal" and broadcast on the evening of 8 August, focused on the use of the ancient Chinese suction-based massage technique by 19-time gold medallist Michael Phelps and his teammates.

According to the channel's correspondent, Phelps "owes much of his success to vacuum massage". The practice, he continued, "improves blood circulation and metabolism, which means that muscles recover faster after physical exercise. So its effects are very similar to those of meldonium".

It's all totally above board, by the way. More on the practice here.
