After Team GB finished fourth in Monday's rugby sevens, former player Maggie Alphonsi has given an insight to how the team may be feeling today... 

"Fourth is the most painful place to finish. You know how hard you have worked. You can see it, you can touch it, you can feel it. But you come away with nothing. Coming fourth, it's so painful."

Last night in the wake of the medal ceremony for Australia's victorious sevens team, Games volunteer Marjorie Enya entered the pitch and asked Brazil player Isadora Cerullo to marry her.

Not on a whim. The couple live in Sao Paulo, where Cerullo, who has dual US citizenship, moved to focus on making Brazil's squad for the Games.

"I know rugby people are amazing and they would embrace it," said Enya.

"The Olympic Games can look like closure but, for me, it's starting a new life with someone. I wanted to show people that love wins."

The man in charge of security during the Olympics opening ceremony was almost robbed as he returned to his car on the morning after the Games officially opened. Felipe Seixas was approached by four men carrying knives as he walked to his car outside the Maracana stadium. Security officers accompanying Mr Seixas opened fire on the assailants, killing one of them on the spot. More on that here., external

There are plenty of Olympic siblings - Becky and Ellie Downie, Jamie and Andy Murray, etc etc - but history is being made at Rio 2016 as we have our first mother/son competitors at the same Games.

Competing for Soviet Union, sports shooter Nino Salukvadze made her Olympic debut in 1988. Joining her this year for the first time is her 18-year-old son, Tsotne Machavariani. 

“It’s a double joy for me, because I will participate in the Olympics for the first time in my life and because I will compete in Rio alongside my mother,” Machavariani told news agency, Reuters.  

Salukvadze is now competing in her eighth Olympics. She was Georgia's flag bearer at London 2012.

Dutch gymnast Yuri Gelder is on a plane back to the Netherlands rather than preparing for the rings final.

The 33-year-old unwisely decided to celebrate his qualification with a few drinks that were not isotonic or water.

It is not the first time that Gelder has strayed from the straight and narrow.

In 2009, he was suspended from his national team for taking cocaine three days before the national championships.

The race was on for Argentina's Emiliano Grillo to get his clubs back in time for the start of the golf on Thursday.

American Airlines lost his vital piece of luggage as he made his way to Brazil and Grillo, ranked 39th in the world, took to social media to get them back.

"American Air seriously, find me a human in JFK, MIA, or Sao Paolo that can physically look for my bag and confirm where it is and send it," he tweeted.

He feared he would miss his big chance to compete at Rio 2016 but the pair were finally reunited on Tuesday.

It must have been a very important call or text he was waiting for.   

Britain's Ed Ling swapped his tractor for a place in the men's trap shooting at Rio 2016 and did the business by winning bronze.

The 33-year-old had struggled at Athens 2004 and London 2012 but beat beat Czech David Kostelecky 13-9 to win GB's third medal of the Olympics.

"It was third time lucky for me but shooting is a funny sport where sometimes you can go out there and things can go really well and other times you can't hit a barn door," said Ling.

"It is a great sport and I really love it."

Since the modern Olympic era began in 1896, no host country has increased its medal tally at the next summer Games.

Can Team GB buck the trend? They won 65 medals in London and have been given a target of 48 in Rio - which, if achieved, would make it their most successful overseas Olympics.

Tom Daley and Daniel Goodfellow had a tense wait before finding out they had won the bronze in the men's synchronised 10m platform.

"Going into the last round there's an intense pressure in any competition, but when it's the Olympics it multiplies by a million," said Daley.

Goodfellow added: "I was nervous. But when we first started we knew there would be pressure. And we knew we'd be the last divers to go.

"We just kept our nerve and stayed in the moment."

Britain's Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow only started training together last October but they won Olympic bronze in the men's synchronised 10m platform at Rio 2016.

The pair clinched only GB's eighth Olympic diving medal after pipping Germany to third place in a tense finish as China won gold and USA the silver.

They were the last pair to dive in the open-air Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre, meaning they knew what they needed to do to overhaul Germany's former world champions Patrick Hausding and Sascha Klein with their final effort.

With a score of over 84 points needed, the British duo waited anxiously before leaping into the pool in celebration when the score of 89.64 came up.

The Times splash their front page with photos from the beach volleyball match between Germany and Egypt on their front page. The sport's dress code was relaxed in 2012.

Usain Bolt doesn't do ordinary and the six-time Olympic champion's news conference included samba-ing with some Brazilian dancers and being serenaded in rap by a Norwegian journalist. 

Yes, you are reading right and staying up through the night to watch the Games is not making you hallucinate.

"I like to entertain, because that's what people come out to see," said Bolt. "I try to entertain and make it different. That's my personality."  

The Norwegian journalist declined to ask a question - instead proclaiming his love for Bolt before rapping a song in his honour and then blowing him kisses. You can watch the amazing scenes by clicking the the below video.
