Australia knew they had a lot to do and they didn't look as tidy as they had done, but they gave it their absolute all.

Go out hard and see if they could hang on was their only option. Team GB picked up the pace, lap by lap, until they got to full capacity. It was a steady development for Team GB and that is how they like to approach the event.

Sir Bradley takes an extra lap of the velodrome than the rest of his gold-winning team. He was probably trying to gather his thoughts after such an amazing achievement.

There are plenty of hugs with the support crew and the Australia team who came so close. And he blows a kiss to the thousands of British fans who can proudly say they were there when history was made.

Team pursuit gold medalist Ed Clancy on BBC TV: "This is the best gold of them all. If truth be told we haven't won a fat deal between London and now. We had some big downs and crossing the line there has made every single pedal rev and every training session worthwhile.

"We've been through the mill a bit. The medical team have put 1000 man hours into my back to get me here."

Sir Bradley Wiggins on BBC TV: "It's hard not to come off the track and spout a load of cliches but really, the last 12 months we have done everything together.

"Training camps at altitude, early starts and late finishes. Cycling on Christmas Day. It was all for this and we've done it. These three guys here are amazing.

"When you have guys like that it makes your life easier. I was trying not to think about winning but these guys have been bouncing off the ceiling all afternoon. It was fantastic."

How's this for a picture? Sir Bradley Wiggins, Sir Chris Hoy and Sir Steve Redgrave. 16 (yes, sixteen) Olympic gold medals between them, the three greatest British Olympians of all time, three knights of the realm.

If you were to put together a British sporting equivalent of Mount Rushmore, it would look a bit like this.
