For now, though, we'll reflect on that sensational heptathlon high jump competition, keep an eye on the men's golf, swimming heats and the men's 20km walk.

There's also a British defending champion in action...

Between now and late tonight there will also be British interest in trampolining, badminton, table tennis and hockey. Rafael Nadal will go for gold in the men's doubles and then, in the wee small hours, we'll juggle swimming and athletics.

    After that? The velodrome.

The sauna-like noise box will present two chances for British success this evening. The women's team sprint finals are at 22:00 and, after that, history beckons for Sir Bradley Wiggins in the men's team pursuit at around 22:30.

An emotional Elena Allen is wiping away tears after exiting at the qualification stage of the women's skeet.

The three time Olympian is frustrated she was on the range during a spell in which the wind was notably stronger. "It feels unfair but life is unfair," she tells the BBC.

"I had a problem with the gun but I don't know what hit me in that second round. "I have no desire to give up. I will be trying to qualify for Tokyo. "It's not hurting that badly, I'm just upset about the second round."

Allen - in her third Games - had to overcome a malfunction with her gun in round one.

The emotion has died down a bit now, but rowing gold for GB's Helen Glover and Heather Stanning in the women's pair and a fifth consecutive Olympic gold in the men's four made it a very special 20 minutes in the stands at Lagoa this morning.

The partners of Glover and Stanning - Steve Backshall and Johnny Howse - were as tense as you can imagine building up to the race, so when the pair finally crossed the line to defend their Olympic crown, no wonder the emotion came pouring out.

She's done it. Amber Hill is through and into the last six competitors for an Olympic medal.

She had to nail her last shot and did so to an almighty roar from her family.

"Go on. Get in there Amber," was the cry.

It was do or die there, the crowd and media held their breath but that's 70 from 75 in qualifying and enough. The skeet final is at 19:00 BST.

Hill is elated, hands in the air, beaming smile. What a story it would be if she came up trumps here.

Just one unforced error for Murray against Johnson's nine.
