    Women's heptathlon

Four years ago Jessica Ennis - as she was then - had a truly unforgettable experience in London. It wasn't quite to be tonight but it's great to see a huge smile still cracked across her face.

Silver, not gold. But she was beaten by a stellar display from a young athlete.

    Jessica Ennis-Hill wins heptathlon silver

    Steve Cram
BBC athletics commentator on BBC TV

Jess did everything she can. It was a big ask for her to run a personal best. Jess was a couple of seconds off of what was required.

The gold medal she craved was grabbed away in the long jump and javelin and you have to hand it to Thiam.

What a superb display from Nafissatou Thiam! She hit five PBs in seven events and you cannot argue with that. The 21-year-old finished with an 800m of 2:16.54 to take gold.

    An absolute force.

He's got five golds here, it's probably one of his most successful Olympics... probably.

Why does he have to retire? He's brilliant!

    Can Ennis-Hill do it?published at 03:18 British Summer Time 14 August 2016

    Women's heptathlon

The athletes are out in the blocks. If you're just tuning in here's what must happen for Jessica Ennis-Hill to win gold.

She has to beat Nafissatou Thiam by a shade under 10 seconds. If Thiam can finish close to Ennis-Hill then it's gold for the 21-year-old.

But pressure can do weird things in sport. Let's find out...

    Can Ennis-Hill do it?published at 03:16 British Summer Time 14 August 2016

    Women's heptathlon

Jessica Ennis-Hill needs to make up around 10 seconds on Nafissatou Thiam to take gold in the 800m. Their PBs are close to 10 seconds apart but their best performances this year saw Thiam clock 2:17.28 and Ennis-Hill 2:11.46.

Close, but a repeat of that would mean gold for Belgium.

'It is going to be fantastic'published at 03:15 British Summer Time 14 August 2016

    Athletics: Women's heptathlon - 800m

    Michael Johnson
Four-time Olympic gold medallist athlete on BBC One

With only the 800m left in the women's heptathlon, Belgium's Nafissatou Thiam is in the lead, with Great Britain's Jessica Ennis-Hill, the 2012 champion, in second.

Jess has so much experience and success. She can only focus on the controllables and will not worry about what she can't control. She won't focus on Katarina Johnson-Thompson, she won't focus on Thiam, she won't focus on the clock.

The momentum favours Thiam. If she runs a personal best and comes second that is still a success for her. It is going to be tough, but it is going to be fantastic. It is Thiam's race to lose and her gold medal to lose as she is there in the lead. It is a mental chess game.
