Becky James feathers the accelerator on the back straight.

Zhong Tianshi has kept a little in reserve, finds her second wind, but James has track position and slingshots off the final bend to take victory against the world champion.

A big result to start the afternoon for Team GB.

Next up is James' team-mate Katy Marchant.

  6. Where have all the world records gone?published at 13:58 British Summer Time 16 August 2016

If you can’t remember a recent record in a field event – discus, shot put or long jump for example – don’t worry, your memory has not failed you.

The records books for field events have barely been troubled for 20 years. Out of all eight throwing and jumping events only one men’s record, for pole vault, has been broken since 2000.

Our friends at BBC Worldwide have produced these interesting graphs which highlight this very fact.

Both have overcome horrific injuries to be here.

    And they are off...

Should be a quicker pace in this heat. Knowing the time to aim for will help them all run a tactical race.

If they are able to run 15:20 then the top 10 will make the final and Brendan Foster believes both Brits can do it...

Good to see all the GB Olympic pool swimmers down on Copacabana beach today to cheer on team-mate Jack Burnell.

As you can tell from their social media accounts they're now very much 'relaxing' following the completion of their races and not all look entirely fresh, but they're here and that's what counts.

Team leaders looked happy when 'Burnell sixth' flashed up on the scoreboard. Well placed after one lap.

    The five automatic qualifiers are:

Hellen Obiri - Kenya in 15:19.38.

    Yasemin Can - Turkey

    Mercy Cherono - Keyna

    Shelby Houlihan - USA

    Susan Kuijken - Netherlands

GB's Laura Whittle is in 10th and is unlikely to make it through as a fastest loser but she says she was determined to enjoy it which she did.

"I am just really happy to have been here at my first Olympics and to run on the track. I was a bit nervous before but then saw my family and they waved at me and it calmed me down.

"I really enjoyed it despite probably not being fast enough to make the final"

    Jarrod Poort

More than forty minutes into the men's 10km and Jarrod Poort of Australia is still out in front by more than a minute after a rocket-powered start.

This was an incredibly gutsy move. If he can make it stick, well...

The chasing pack behind have slowed with Tunisian Oussama Mellouli unwilling to keep doing all the donkey work on the front.

Time for some leadership among the peloton. Time for Great Britain's Jack Burrell to step up?
