    He had a couple of nasty trips in the middle there but didn't panic, held his nerve through the back straight and finishes in 3:39.26.

    Four-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie says fellow sailor Giles Scott can dominate the sport's Finn class for as long as he wants to.

    Britain's Eilish McColgan has qualified for the 5,000m final and has said she is "over the moon" with how she ran. 

    "There were a couple of times where I thought we were going to go down as there were a lot of people falling. I just stuck in though, I wanted it so badly, it's really difficult to describe because it's just been so hard to get here. 

    "The aim was to make that final so to be honest there is absolutely no pressure on me now."

    Unfortunately, team-mate Steph Twell didn't make the final as she only managed to be the sixth fastest loser. The first five make it.

    Oxford-born Spaniard Marcus Walz produces a remarkable finish to take the kayak 1000m title.

    The 21-year-old was fifth with 250m remaining before powering through to win a time of   three minutes 31.447 seconds.

    Czech 6ft 8in giant Josef Dostal took silver in 3:32.145 and Russia's Roman Anoshkin wins bronze in 3:33.363.

    "I need to be hard on myself today. Training has been going amazing. It's a really hard on to stomach. I worked well but I got tripped in the race and I think I lost my momentum and I just couldn't quite recover it"

    Romanian gymnast Catalina Ponor finished without a medal in Rio which, according to Romanian news outlet Libertatea, external, was the first time in 44 years that Romania has not won an Olympic medal in gymnastics.

    Romanians went online to back Ponor, with one saying: "Congratulations anyway, [she] had an exceptional career. The condition of gymnastics cannot be put [blamed] on the gymnasts, they are poor pawns.

    "When you're not capable of having a coherent medium and long-term development plan, even without shining financial backing… you can't have demands."

    Another said, external: "We are reaping the fruits of investments in sports in the last 26 years. Thank you to our [parliamentary] immune lawmakers."

    Other Romanians praised Ponor as a role model, external: "Congratulations Catalina for your presence in the final, for being a role model for the younger generations, for your whole career!"
