There weren't many German fans at the throbbing Beach Volleyball Arena last night, but those that were, including Louisa and Heinrich Eufinger, were eager to stand out.

The couple from near Frankfurt bought their tickets for the final six months ago and didn't expect to be watching German duo Laura Ludwig and Kira Wilkinhorst take on Brazilian world champions Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas in the gold medal match.

However, Heinrich told me before the match that Ludwig's serve was a secret weapon and so it proved. Did they feel like they spoiled the party? "No," Heinrich says. "The Brazilians are welcome to party with us. We thought they had a medal chance but to win gold is amazing."

Those home-made hats certainly proved worthwhile!

If you're just waking up, the late, late news from last night was that Germany beat Brazil in the gold medal match of the women's beach volleyball, spoiling the 12,000-strong party on Copacabana Beach.

World champions Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas looked on course for a first Brazilian gold since 1996 after their semi-final win over the defending champions United States.

But in blustery conditions they could not handle Germany's Kira Walkenhorst, who brilliantly blocked at the net, nor Laura Ludwig's serving as the European champions went on to win a first medal for their country in this sport.

Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross won bronze after defeating the other Brazilian pair of Larissa Francha and Talita Rocha, but at least the hosts have another chance of gold in the men's final on Thursday night.

UK Sport chief executive Liz Nicholl has explained to BBC Radio 5 live how the levels of funding for Olympic cycles are decided, and what UK Sport believe their investment should contribute to.

"If you're surrounding athletes with world-class support, there is a correlation between the number of athletes and the amount of money that is needed in terms of coaching, sports science, sports medicine, competition costs, training costs. All that is covered by our strategic investment in the sports," Nicholl said.

"It's a partnership in terms of the investment and the way we work with sports."
