Fifteen-year-old Ren Qian stunned judges with her dominating gold medal win in the 10m platform diving final.

But her grandfather Xiao Chuanli has now revealed the hard work behind her apparently effortless displays.

In an interview to Chinanews.com,, external Xiao Chuanli said his granddaughter began training as a gymnast at the age of three, before moving on to diving, and did not take a single holiday while training for her provincial team.

“The last time I saw her was during the National Olympic selection in Guangxi province. I wanted to take her out," he said. "But she only had time to give me the medal she won and return to Beijing for training immediately.”

Xiao hasn’t called his granddaughter since the beginning of Rio Olympics because he doesn’t want to bother her.

“She hasn't been home for three years. I hope I can see her at home after the Olympics."

It's not too much of a stretch to describe Usain Bolt as his sport's saviour. 

His remarkable feats can, briefly, bring the world to a halt, while he possesses a magnetic appeal that transcends track and field and crosses generations.

Former Soviet Olympic wrestling champion Mikhail Mamiashvili, who currently heads the Russian Wrestling Federation, has launched harsh criticism against two female wrestlers after they failed to take gold at the 2016 Rio Games.

Russian wrestlers Natalya Vorobyova and Valeria Koblova both won silver medals in the 69kg and 58kg weight classes respectively.

"Both showed themselves to be weak-willed; they should not have fought that way for the country, for the flag," Mamiashvili told Russian TV channel 360., external "Their competitors were really serious, but our girls were supposed to win. To gift their opponents the gold medals in 10 seconds is the preserve of losers."

Vorobyova told Russian sports paper Sport-Express that she found Mamiashvili's remarks "offensive".

Sports presenter Charlie Webster, who contracted malaria in Rio following a 3,000-mile charity cycle ride, has been brought out of her medically induced coma, her manager has said.  

Webster, 33, who has worked for Sky and ITV, became unwell after watching the Olympic opening ceremony.

She remains in intensive care but doctors have said they are "very happy with Charlie's neurological results".

Her mother said: "The fact Charlotte is now conscious is amazing."

As one of the replies to this tweet points out, the only direct flights from Rio de Janeiro back to the United Kingdom land in London.

If you have the homecoming parade anywhere else, Team GB will have to make another trip to wherever you are holding it.

So the mayor of London says he wants a victory parade to be held in the city to celebrate the achievements of Team GB's Olympians and Paralympians.

BUT...

Who said it had to be in London? After all, shouldn't the capitals of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland get a look in?

Perhaps the town where the most British Olympians were born? 

Maybe the county where the most British medallists have trained in?

Athletes at the Olympic Games in Rio have elected banned Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva to represent them at the International Olympic Committee.

The 2012 Olympic champion is among the Russian track and field athletes stopped from competing at the Games because of their country’s state-sponsored doping programme.

But Olympians selected her - and three others – to be their voice on the IOC’s athletes’ commission.

More than 5,000 athletes from 23 countries voted in the elections, which take place at each Olympic Games.

Of those, more than 1,300 cast their vote for Isinbayeva.

The 34-year-old has been an outspoken critic of the decision to ban the Russian athletics team from the Rio Games.

Can golf's return to the Olympics be marked by two British golds? It's definitely possible...

After Justin Rose's victory in the men's tournament, Charley Hull is tied third, two shots off the lead, at the halfway stage of the women's event.

Hull, 20, shot a five-under 66 in round two to move to eight under, two adrift of South Korean leader Inbee Park.

American Stacy Lewis produced the best round of the day - an eight-under-par 63 - and is one shot behind Park.

GB's Catriona Matthew, 46, moved from tied 26th at the start of play to a share of 13th position on five under.

Round three begins at 11:30 BST with Hull teeing off at 15:09.

Great Britain have bigger Chinese-shaped superpower fish to fry now right?

Well, the Aussies are not giving up that easily.

The Sydney Morning Herald, external have crunched the numbers to produce a medal table based on population size and suddenly the old rivalry is as hot as Christmas day barbie on Bondi.

Great Britain is just one place ahead of the Aussies on gold medals per 10 million inhabitants and lagging in 13th - compared to Australia's ninth - if you consider medals per 10 million citizens.

Formula 1 in the Olympic Games may sound like a ludicrous concept, but it could just work.

In many ways, F1 is made for sport's greatest event, with its podium denoting first, second and third, and the International Olympic Committee formally recognising motorsport's governing body the FIA in 2012.

Plus, it has been in before.

Crista Cullen spilled claret on the astro in Great Britain's semi-final win over New Zealand after copping an elbow to the head.

Five minutes and a quick application of magic sponge later, she was back on the pitch.

"I was watching in the Olympic Park and thinking these girls are just ridiculous. I thought I would never, ever, be as good as these girls."

Dreams do come true, Lily Owsley.

Having watched from the sidelines at London 2012, the 21-year-old will compete for Team GB in the women's hockey final against the Netherlands later today (21:00 BST)

Owsley spoke to the BBC's Get Inspired team earlier this year about her path to Rio.

Excellent work, as ever, by satirical website the Daily Mash, external on Great Britain's prospects of beating China to second place on the Olympic medal table.

"As Britain continues to beat China at sport, the communist state responded with some typically laid-back banter about remembering one’s friends if there is ever a massive war over the planet’s increasingly scarce resources," they report.

"A China spokesperson said: 'There’s no way this might affect things when we’re drawing up a list of allies in a possible World War III, which incidentally we would probably win.

“'Or maybe it will because we are humiliated and angry! Ha ha ha good joke, not really.

“'Anyway I understand you guys are very popular in mainland Europe so they would definitely protect you.'"
