The Germans were very much in control throughout - they never let the Brazilians get too far away from them and then they came through strongly. It was a fantastic 1000m race.

    Double thumbs up indeed.

Is this an omen for the men's football final later today?

If so, it is not good news for the hosts.

Germany hunt down early leaders Brazil to overhaul them in the final 50m.

Sebastian Brendal and Jan Vandrey take gold.

It would have been a shock if they had been denied and the Brazilian duo of Erlon Sousa de Silva and Isaquias Quieroz dos Santoa heartily celebrate their silver.

'It so emotional to see one of your best friends do that'published at 13:18 British Summer Time 20 August 2016

Liam Heath's kayak double partner Jon Schofield: "It so emotional to see one of your best friends do that. I have seen all the work that he has put in and how much he deserves it. He can truly inspire a generation back home, there is no point in doing any of this if it is not having a positive impact on peoples' lives.

"Hearts in our mouths in the stadium there but Liam being Liam just flew by them! I would like it if he got a better start but if you are as fast as Liam you can afford to be a little bit calmer in the early metres."

"It is worth every ounce. I want to thank everyone here and at home. Jon (Schofield, doubles partner) has been out every day doing drills with me and checking my boat over even though he has finished."

Canada's Mark de Jonge and Australian Stephen Bird - who trains alongside Heath - could be dangerous.
