That familiar old sprint from Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya, who’s ran a brilliant race. He’s enjoying this taking all the adulation from the crowd.

Kenya's EliudKipchoge is getting a police escort towards the finish. Forty kilometres run, just two to go.

Ethiopia's Feyisa Lilesa is slowing behind him and might yet be overhauled by American Galen Rupp who is looking ropey himself.

Both could be in danger from world champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie of Eritrea.

It is coming to a thrilling conclusion. Just not for gold.

He has 13 seconds on Feyisa Lilesa in second.

Galen Rupp of the United States is toiling hard in third. He could be gobbled up by the pack behind over the last five kilometres

Callum Hawkins of Great Britain is still putting in an excellent showing. He is 11th at 35km and Stanley Biwott of Kenya has dropped out in front of him.

Ethiopia's Feyisa Lilesa has managed to cling onto the Kenyan's coattails, but only just.

Kipchoge even has the confidence to order Lilesa out of his slip-stream.

This is a statement of intent.

    Tom from Florida

Meet Tom, a Florida resident who last night told me he was at his 10th Games.

He won't pick a favourite as he respects local cultures each time he says. But he's hooked, he trades pins at Games to break the ice and meet new people.

After a chat I walk away and some 500 metres later meet three young Brazilians. They ask me if I want to trade pins. I say no and point them in Toms's direction, showing them the above image to identify him.

"Ah man, that's my friend," says one of them with excitement. "Is he here? Where?"

Off he skips quickly to find Tom. The words "that's my friend" stick with me.

Two people, based thousands of miles apart and separated by probably three decades in age yet bound together by Olympic magic. And pins.
