The Koreans managed to grab one last goal but there was never going to be enough time for them to catch the Mexicans.

Mexico v Brazil (Ibaraki Kashima Stadium, Tokyo)

Japan v Spain (Saitama Stadium, Tokyo)

    Job done for Great Britain.

Goals from Susannah Townsend and Hannah Martin secure the defending Olympic champions a safe passage through to the knockout stages.

Sadly, debutants Ireland wave goodbye to Tokyo 2020 as they finish fifth in pool A.

GB will now face Spain in the quarter-finals.

I know in [Daryll Neita's] interview she was disappointed. But there is so much she can take from this experience. She has been in an Olympic final, she can't be too hard on herself because she was in the final and she raised her game when she needed to.

Hopefully she can build on that going forwards.

Elaine Thompson-Herah has matched what Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce did in 2008 and 2012 (defending the Olympic 100m title).

She'll want to get one up on her countrywoman.

'I'm meant to be here'published at 14:09 British Summer Time 31 July 2021

    Women's 100m final

Team GB's Daryll Neita speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after finishing eighth in the women's 100m final: "It's great to make the final. I came here with that ambition. This perfomance does not represent where I'm at.

"I've ticked a lot of boxes this year, but it's the Olympics. I made the final - anything could happen. It's not the race I wanted but it's an achievement.

"I'm meant to be here, I feel like I belong - I'm at home. The mentality has grown and there's no limits."

Elaine Thompson-Herah is so fluid, that fluid open motion in the latter part of the race.

You could visibly see Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce just sinking a little bit, that tension in her upper body and Elaine was the absolute opposite in that moment.

I was surprised because Elaine Thompson-Herah got an amazing start, she executed that race to perfection.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce always has a good start but Elaine was with her the whole way. Shelly-Ann then had to make a decision, and she made the wrong one, which most likely tightened her up. Elaine just gained confidence throughout the race.

'I am sure I will go home and there will be some tears'published at 14:07 British Summer Time 31 July 2021

    Women's 100m final

Women's 100m silver medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce: "It wasn't the best 30m because I had a stumble at about the third step and I never recovered from it. Nevertheless I am grateful to be able to come out here and represent what God has given me.

"I am excited because as a mother and my fourth Olympics to be able to stand again on the podium is just a tremendous honour. I am hoping wherever in the world, mothers, athletes, females we understand that there is so much more we can achieve.

"It is crazy, but you know my emotions are still very raw right now. I am sure I will go home and there will be some tears. I have been through this many, many times, so I am just really excited about what I have been able to do tonight."

What a race - 10.61. Wow. A Jamaican clean sweep is what we anticipated. I hoped someone might shake it up a bit. I can see Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is not entirely happy.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce got out, but it was the manner in which Elaine Thompson-Herah came through. From 60 metres on, it was just game over.

She was so fluid, so quick and so impressive. I loved it!

We saw it in 2008 - a Jamaican clean sweep. These women know how to run 100m.

Elaine Thompson-Herah, you have regained that Olympics title, you were pushed all the way by your couhtry women.

    Wow. What a race!

That did not disappoint. This woman has been through some tortuous times with Achilles surgery and to deliver in such an impressive time. It took an Olympic record.

It was an electric performance from Elaine Thompson-Herah. She has a difficult time since winning Olympic gold in Rio, but what a celebration.

Six athletes under 11 seconds today, so it was truly a lightning 100m.
