Korir takes the title and Rotich takes the silver and that will be celebrated hugely in Kenya.

Korir does have that 400m pace in his locker and that false start in the 400m meant he could concentrate on this.

Individual showjumping - gold for GB

Ben Maher's showjumping victory on Explosion W gives the Great Britain equestrian team a fifth Olympic medal in Tokyo, equalling their record haul achieved in London.

His win followed gold for the eventing team and Tom McEwen's individual eventing silver, plus team dressage bronze and Charlotte Dujardin's individual dressage bronze.

Maher's Team GB colleagues Scott Brash and Harry Charles did not make the jump-off.

Brash and Hello Jefferson produced an immaculate jumping round, but one time fault ended their medal chances. Charles had four fences down on Romeo 88 and retired just before the end of his round.

Ready for another final? How does the men's 800m sound?

Kenya's Ferguson Rotich qualified fastest from the semi-finals and will be desperate to be among the medals after finishing fifth in Rio five years ago.

He is one of two Kenyans vying to replace injured compatriot David Rudisha as champion, the other being Emmanuel Korir.

Botswana's 2012 Olympic silver medallist Nijel Amos was tripped in his semi-finals and later reinstated, expanding the field to nine athletes.

Magnificent Maher takes goldpublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 4 August 2021

    Individual showjumping

It was a dazzling display by Great Britain's Ben Maher aboard Explosion W to take individual showjumping gold.

He is Team GB's second successive Olympic showjumping champion following Nick Skelton's success with Big Star in Rio five years ago.

The 38-year-old helped Britain to London 2012 team gold alongside Skelton, Scott Brash and Peter Charles.

Thirty combinations contested the final, with six going through to a jump-off before Maher triumphed from silver medallist Peder Fredricson, of Sweden, and Holland's Maikel van der Vleuten in bronze.
