More from Hector Pardoe: "Anyone who says open water swimming is not a contact sport - it is. You can only see what happens on the surface of the race, underneath there are so many kicks and scratches - it's brutal.

"I came onto the scene quite fast and I've progressed a lot in the last two years, I haven't experienced this temperature. I've only done two World Cups, which is remarkable for anybody. Everyone in this race, I'm sure, has had more experience than that.

"I'm going to get more experience under my belt, grind, come back for Paris and try to win it."

GB's Hector Pardoe, speaking on BBC One: "It wasn't really what I expected from the start. I started really fast from the front, really warm conditions that I'm not used to, I've never raced in such hot waters. I started to panic when I was behind, I could see that any chance of top five, top six was over.

"I was trying to secure it as much as I could, didn't get the top 10 finish. I did well to catch the group up, I was feeling okay, I got back into it.

"On my last lap, I took an elbow to the face - I thought I'd lost my eye. My goggles came off completely. I always hoped that if I got injured like that, I'd be able to finish the race - but my goggles fell off and I couldn't even get them.

"I couldn't see anything, I thought my eye had fallen out in the water. I went up to the lifeguards and said: 'My eye, my eye! Is it okay?' They weren't giving me a very decisive opinion and I had to get out after that.

"It's fine, they're just going to stitch it up for me back at the Olympic Village. It was bleeding everywhere."

Yesterday, a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old were on the podium in the women's park skateboarding and today we go to the other end of the scale as 46-year-old Dallas Oberholzer takes part in these prelims.

The age of the entire podium yesterday was 44, two years younger than Oberholzer alone!

Fun fact (fun at this time of the morning anyway) Oberholzer says he discovered skateboarding through the 1986 film Thrashin.

Simon Gleave, head of sports analysis, Nielsen Gracenote says: "Great Britain have closed the gap with the Rio and London Olympics and now have 48 medals after 12 days of competition compared to 49 in 2016 and 48 in 2012.

"However, at both of those Olympics, sailing, taekwondo and triathlon were still going on in the last four days of the Games so expect 2021 to fall behind again on total medals won."

Utterly brilliant! He needs to be looked after now, because he has done so much work.

The water temperature is one degree above maximum, one degree above cancellation temperature here. Wellbrock is a masterful swimmer - relentless pace. What a race.

As well as a tremendously difficult swim, it sounds like the 10km is a pretty brutal experience as you get kicked and punched if you are in the main group.

A particularly bad hit from a stray elbow was the reason behind Hector Pardoe's withdrawal.

This has been the best game of chess in the water. Wellbrock eased back, let them catch him and they worked so hard to catch up, then he gave another injection of pace. Then, at 8,000m, he started the 'action movie.'

He's totally broken the field. Masterful distance swimming.
