Bradshaw 'can go out and enjoy' pole vault nowpublished at 11:23 British Summer Time 5 August 2021

    Women's pole vault

Holly Bradshaw's pole vault final is starting imminently...

Back in May, she spoke to BBC Sport's Mike Henson about catching Covid-19 four months before the Games and how she learned to love pole vault again.

In four successive seasons, between 2014 and 2017, she had to undergo surgery for various injuries.

"I went on a journey, with the injuries, where I was really resenting the sport," she said.

"I had gone down a track of doing things for the wrong reason and I had to reflect on why I am doing it.

"At the European Indoors this year I was disappointed to finish third. But five or six years ago I would have been so upset, crying on TV and beating myself up for not winning.

"Now, after the mental things I have changed, I can go out and enjoy the competitiveness, rather than only to win.

"If I hadn't changed my psychology back in 2017 I don't even know whether I would be in the sport now because it was killing me.

"The pressure to perform and prove to people I was good was just unhealthy."

The women's heptathlon concludes later with the 800m but it will do so without Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson, whose Olympics came to a heartbreaking end yesterday.

The 28-year-old pulled up with a calf injury in the 200m and withdrew from the event.

"I've been knocked so many times and got back up," Johnson-Thompson wrote on Twitter this morning.

"But it will take a lot of time for me to process this reality."

'I hope I've changed people's minds about skateboarding' - Brownpublished at 11:12 British Summer Time 5 August 2021

    BBC One

After becoming Great Britain's youngest Olympic medallist of all time on Wednesday, 13-year-old bronze medal-winning skateboarder Sky Brown said on BBC One: "I'm feeling insanely happy, it's crazy to be here, I'm thankful.

"I hope I've changed people's minds about skateboarding. People don't know how beautiful skateboarding is, there are no rules, you can be creative, just get out there and do whatever you want.

"Falling on your first two runs is the worst feeling ever. I usually make my first two runs so I was a little shocked yesterday. My dad told me: 'This is just a contest, even if you fall you're still amazing, you're still good.'

Then Sakura Yosozumi (Japan's gold medallist) said: 'Sky, we believe in you, you've got it, just stick it.' Everyone was cheering and I just thought, 'I've got to do this. I've got to land it.'

On her crash last year that resulted in a fractured skull: "That was a bit of a rollercoaster, but that accident made stronger, it made me feel powerful, it made me want to go hard and push myself. That was a heavy time for my family. It's insane to be here right now.

On potentially competing in surfing at Paris 2024: "That's the goal, that's my dream, competing for skating and surfing in Paris. That would be really cool. I surf more than I skate!

"All I did to get here was believe in myself and take baby steps. If you believe in yourself, you could be here. But you've got to have fun and enjoy the journey."
