    Women's pole vault

It has been a very shaky start to the pole vault for defending champion Katerina Stefanidi.

She has needed all three attempts at both of the opening heights, but makes it over 4.70m to stay in the hunt. Nine athletes are already out.

Kerr finishing fast and he will go through.

Heyward just taking sixth place and just looking at the time - a new Olympic record from Kipsang so that might augur well for Heyward to be fast enough.

  3. Kipsang sets Olympic recordpublished at 12:16 British Summer Time 5 August 2021

    Men's 1500m semi-finals

A fast start from Jake Heyward, dashing to the front before Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen takes charge alongside Australia's Stewart McSweyn.

The Australian strides clear of the pack and then Abel Kipsang starts to come through on the bell, but Heyward and Josh Kerr are also in the mix.

Can they kick on into a qualification place? A top-five place will definitely do it, Kerr places third to make it and Heyward also progresses as a fastest loser after finishing sixth.

That's three Brits in the final of the men's 1500m.

Meanwhile, Kipsang has set an Olympic record of 3:31:65!

Excellent work from Great Britain's Holly Bradshaw.

She failed her first attempt at 4.70m, but nails the second as her coach puts his hand over his heart in the stands.

She is the second athlete to clear that height, with some of the gold medal contenders struggling in the early stages.

Jake Wightman strikes for home - brilliant from him, excellent performance.

Made no mistakes and perfectly judged that race. Tactically he's very good and when he's fit and healthy as well, he puts races together like that.

The Brit storms clear down the straight and wins his heat in 3:33.48. Superb run.

Zoey Clarke: "We were really trying our best to get ourselves in the top three positions so we pushed ourselves really hard. Bit tricky on the home straight but we did it."

Laviai Nielsen: "It feels like we’ve been in Japan for ages and we’ve managed to come together as a team and hang out as a team in the holding camp and here. We’ve got an incredibly close knit team and we’ve got Jodie (Williams) in the finals who ran amazing yesterday so just wanted to get us in a good position and hope we bring more to the final."

Nicole Yeargin: "I wanted to bring it home and make sure we got that big Q."

Geoff Wightman and Katharine Merry are doing a sterling job calling the action as the stadium announcers in Tokyo.

As Geoff reminded Katharine, he will be paying a little more attention than usual to one of the events.

His son Jake is up against world champion TImothy Cheruiyot in a tough first semi-final at 12:00 BST. The top five in each semi-final and two fastest losers from across the two races advance to the final on Saturday.

    Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill
London 2012 Olympic heptathlon champion on BBC TV

It was fantastic to see Keely Hodgkinson in the 800m yesterday, she brought it home and raised our mood bringing that first silver medal.

That gave us such great hope but there's definitely a question about where the other medals are going to come from.

We've had a situation that is out of our control with injuries to KJT and Dina Asher Smith - we need to see how many other medals we can sneak at this Olympic Games.

It has been a different Games than we all expected but we have to take the last year into account.
