Penalty against Saints again, and John Sutton's break creates an opportunity for the Australian side. Adam Swift shepherds the ball over the touchline and Saints escape for now, but captain Jon Wilkin seems unhappy with some of the decisions going against his team. A quick chat with referee Richard Silverwood, and then we play on.

"No try" appears on the big screen. Looked as if Mark Percival's own arm was in a position to prevent him grounding cleanly and Saints are still scoreless.

Huge cheers from the home crowd as Ben Lowe is pulled up for a penalty. Saints start their set of six 30 metres from the Souths line. The massive Mose Masoe drives them within five metres. Worked wide to Mark Percival - does he ground it? Back to the video ref...

  4. PENALTYpublished at 19:11 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

The pressure cranks up another notch on St Helens as forward Joe Greenwood is penalised for an illegal ball steal. Souths opt to go for the two points, and Adam Reynolds slots it over from 35 metres.

"That try by Glenn Stewart was just the sixth try that Saints have conceded in six games, going back to the play-offs last season."

But what's this? A mistake by George Burgess from the kick-off, who fails to gather cleanly, giving Saints field position. The ball is worked out to Adam Swift on the Saints left but he's swamped by two Souths defenders and bundled into touch.

Glenn Stewart gives Souths the perfect start. He gets on the end of an Adam Reynolds' kick ahead of Jordan Turner and touches down. Referee Richard Silverwood initially signalled "no try" when referring it upstairs, but the video referee can't save Saints. Russell Crowe in the stands looks a happy chappy already.

A solid, error-free start is vital in big games like this. Warrington and Wigan have both conceded early in their respective World Club Series matches. Have St Helens done likewise? We're up to the screen...

The two teams are lining up in the tunnel. Greg Inglis looks focused at the front of the Souths line, while Saints skipper Jon Wilkin shares a joke with his side's mascot.

The wall of noise and the pyrotechnics can only mean one thing - they're out on the field.

The World Club Challenge is nearly upon us.

"I'm told that they could have sold over 35,000 tickets for this game, such was the interest. This game will also contribute £500,000 to the St Helens economy."

  13. Postpublished at 18:56 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

South Sydney Rabbitohs co-owner Russell Crowe speaking to Sky Sports:

"I'm really looking forward to the game. I expect a tough encounter and it's going to be big up front. St Helens are a great side and we can't take them lightly.

"I don't like to predict outcomes. I just like to enjoy the game.

"Rugby league is the most exciting ball-in-hand sport that exists. It takes a certain kind of warrior to be a champion rugby league player."

St Helens supporters will be desperate not to see this trademark celebration from Greg Inglis at Langtree Park this evening.

It's called the "goanna". Fans of the natural world will know that goannas are lizards.

Inglis performed it after scoring a late try in South Sydney's NRL Grand Final win over Canterbury last October.

Widely regarded as one of the best rugby league players of his generation, Australia international full-back Inglis has assumed the captaincy of his club this season, replacing John Sutton in the role.

Once there were four, now there are just two.

The Burgess brothers - Luke, Sam, George and Thomas - became the first set of four siblings to play for an Australian top-flight side in the same game for more than a century when they all lined up for Souths in August 2013.

Luke has since left the Rabbitohs to join fellow NRL club Manly, while Sam has switched codes to play for Bath in rugby union's Premiership.

But twins George and Thomas, both 22, remain and are both involved in tonight's climax to the World Club Series.

  18. There's a Crowe on the pitchpublished at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

BBC Sport's Nathan Middleton: "Langtree Park was not far off being full half an hour before kick-off for what will be a sell-out for the World Club Challenge.

"After heavy rain and snow in the north west throughout the day, the pitch is looking in very good nick considering - a certain improvement on the DW bog fest in the middle of Wigan against Brisbane last night.

"Souths co-owner and Hollywood actor Russell Crowe, complete with a club jacket on, is currently giving some television interviews on the pitch ahead of the game."

It's played two, won two so far for new St Helens head coach Keiron Cunningham.

But Cunningham, so much of a Saints legend that there is a statue of him outside Langtree Park, knows his team face a much stiffer test this evening.

"They're probably one of the best Souths sides that have ever existed," he told BBC Radio Merseyside. "You've got those Burgess boys, Greg Inglis, great halves, they've got strike out wide - it's going to be good.

"I'm looking forward to seeing that side walk out at Langtree Park. It's going to be a special moment for me as a coach."
