  3. Disappointment for Murraypublished at 18:32 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

It's been a huge sporting weekend for natives of St Helens.

Last night, they were cheering on boxer Martin Murray in his WBA middleweight title bout against Gennady Golovkin in Monte Carlo.

Even St Helens' closest rivals, Wigan Warriors, offered their support ahead of the fight...

But Saints fan Murray's third shot at winning a world title ended in disappointment as he was stopped in the 11th round by Kazakhstan's Golovkin.

So, Anthony Gelling did his best Mwepu Ilunga impression and earned a trip to the sin-bin for his troubles. It mattered little as, seconds later, Corey Parker slotted over the retaken penalty to win the match.

Wigan coach Shaun Wane of Gelling afterwards: "If one person was going to do that, it would be him. He does the weirdest things in training. But it showed to me that he wanted to win."

More build-up to come ahead of St Helens v South Sydney Rabbitohs, but first...

If you were with me for the final stages of Wigan's defeat by Brisbane last night, or you watched the game on television, you will know that Warriors centre Anthony Gelling charged down Corey Parker's extra-time penalty.

It couldn't help but remind me of this...

  8. How they got here - South Sydney Rabbitohspublished at 18:18 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

South Sydney Rabbitohs ended a 43-year wait to win a domestic title last October. For Sam Burgess, it was a painful and emotional farewell.

Having already announced that the NRL Grand Final would be his last rugby league game before switching codes to rugby union, Burgess began in typical fashion, making the first drive of the match and charging at a wall of Canterbury tacklers.

An unfortunate clash of heads with England international team-mate James Graham left Burgess with a fractured cheekbone and eye socket within 10 seconds of kick-off.

But he played on, and put in a man-of-the-match display to inspire Souths to a 30-6 victory.

St Helens had not been Super League champions since 2006 but they ended their eight-year title drought in an eventful Grand Final with bitter rivals Wigan Warriors at Old Trafford last October.

Ben Flower's early red card gave Saints a huge advantage, but they trailed to a Joe Burgess try at half-time.

Second-half scores from Sia Soliola and Tommy Makinson were enough to seal a 14-6 victory that proved the perfect send-off for outgoing coach Nathan Brown.

  10. Who's on Crowe watch?published at 18:12 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

    Russell Crowe

Much of the build-up to tonight's game has centred around this man.

As well as being an Oscar-winning actor, Russell Crowe is also a part-owner of South Sydney Rabbitohs and he's expected to be at Langtree Park to watch his team tonight.

Earlier this week, Crowe spoke to BBC Sport's Simon Stone about a variety of topics, including his thoughts on the future of rugby league.

It was all smiles between the two captains at the World Club Series media conference earlier this week, but both Jon Wilkin and Greg Inglis will have their game faces on by 19:00 GMT.

St Helens, winners of the League Leaders' Shield and the Super League title in 2014, host South Sydney Rabbitohs, who won the NRL title for the first time in 43 years last season.

It's the World Club Challenge, and it should be fun.

  13. Game Two: Extra-time heartbreak for Wiganpublished at 18:05 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

    Corey ParkerImage source, PA

Brisbane went 12-6 up against Wigan and looked set for victory until Warriors winger Joe Burgess, who was at fault for the Broncos' first try, ran the length of the field to cross for a memorable score and send the match into golden-point extra-time.

After several failed drop-goal attempts from both sides, Wigan were penalised in front of their own posts and Corey Parker slotted over the resulting kick to secure a 14-12 win.

  14. Game One: First blood to the Aussiespublished at 18:03 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

    Tyson FrizellImage source, PA

Warrington twice fought back to level their match with St George, tries from Tyson Frizell and Joel Thompson cancelled out by Gareth O'Brien and Ryan Atkins.

The Dragons took the lead again midway through the second half through Josh Dugan and the Australian side held on for an 18-12 victory.

Not content with hammering England at cricket, Australia's rugby league players have got themselves in on the act, gaining the upper hand against the English in the World Club Series.

After narrow defeats for Warrington and Wigan over the past couple of nights, Super League winners St Helens are the only team that can prevent a 3-0 whitewash in favour of the lads from down under...
