Right then, any way back for the wounded Warriors?

Wigan kick off the second half 18 points behind and with their matchday squad down to 15 players, as Michael McIlorum and Tony Clubb were both injured in the first 40 minutes.

  2. Slammin' Sam back in actionpublished at 21:10

HT: Wigan Warriors 6-24 Brisbane Broncos

Big news for all England fans, and probably new coach Wayne Bennett in the Broncos sheds too, as Sam Burgess made his first outing back in the cardinal red and myrtle green as the Rabbitohs beat Gold Coast in a trial match.

The big back-rower scored a try to help his side to a 22-20 trial game success. Good to have you back in rugby league, Sammy lad!

  4. Can wounded Rhinos stop the Cowboys?published at 21:06

Sunday: Leeds Rhinos v North Queensland Cowboys

Standing between Johnathan Thurston's North Queensland Cowboys and a first World Club Challenge success are struggling Super League champions Leeds Rhinos.

Brian McDermott's side are bottom of the table, without a win in 2016 and their list of players out injured is longer than the guest list at a posh wedding (the kind I'm rarely invited to...)

Even so, Leeds are looking forward to the test that awaits them from the NRL champions on Sunday.

"We can't get nervous," forward Brett Ferres told BBC Sport. "We need to go out and enjoy it. It's a big experience. These moments don't come around often."

  5. Thurston's destiny?published at 21:03

Johnathan Thurston is probably the world's best player right now. He's won pretty much all there is to win in rugby league - individually, with his club side North Queensland Cowboys, with his state Queensland, and with his native Australia at international level.

One prize eludes the 32-year-old half-back - the World Club Challenge.

Ahead of Sunday's fixture with Leeds, Thurston told BBC Sport: "To win this World Club Challenge match against Leeds would be fantastic - not so much to 'win a set' but to be able to say we, as a team, were successful in an event in which we competed in for the first time.

"I think the fact we have the same team competing in England that won the NRL premiership last year is very significant and would make any success we had over here that much more special."

Wigan don't deserve to be 24-6 down. They've executed well.

Not going according to the script if you're a Wigan fan, I'm afraid.

Plenty of endeavour from the Warriors, but Brisbane have still crossed the try line four times and appear in complete control of this World Club Series match.

The bigger picture looks even bleaker for Wigan, with hooker Michael McIlorum off with a suspected broken leg and forward Tony Clubb also struggling with a shoulder problem.

A penny for the thoughts of coach Shaun Wane...

  9. try

TRY (Wallace, goal Kahu)published at 40 mins

Into the final two minutes of the first half - can either side find a breakthrough? Yes they can...

Jarrod Wallace breezes through a gap in a tiring Wigan defence to score. Jordan Kahu puts over the kick and Wigan are 18 points behind at half-time.

  10. Wigan Warriors 6-18 Brisbane Broncospublished at 36 mins

A comedy moment for anyone other than Darius Boyd, as the Brisbane full-back chases back to gather a kick and it bounces up straight into his face.

    I didn't laugh. Honest.

  11. Wigan Warriors 6-18 Brisbane Broncospublished at 35 mins

Wigan have lost Michael McIlorum to serious-looking leg injury and Tony Clubb looked in a bad way after a couple of steamroller hits.

The timing for Shaun Wane's side isn't the best, two games into a crucial Super League campaign.

  12. try

TRY (Gillett, goal Parker)published at 32 mins

    Wigan Warriors 6-18 Brisbane Broncos

The home crowd fall silent as a wonderful short pass by Kodi Nikorima sends second-rower Matt Gillett over for Brisbane's third try of the first half.

Corey Parker makes it three kicks from three, and the Broncos lead 18-6.

Wow, Tony Clubb! A huge hit again from the Wigan forward! That's got the crowd going if nothing else.

He looks a little worse for wear, though. Maybe a little winded. And to be honest, I'm not surprised.

That was worth the entrance fee with those two tackles from Tony Clubb!

Shaun Wane's side started 2016 with victories over Catalans and Huddersfield in Super League.

And they're not out of this one by any stretch yet...

  16. try

    Wigan on the board!

Liam Farrell puts centre Dan Sarginson in for a close-range try and the Warriors have their first points of the contest.

Matty Smith, affected by a swirling wind that causes the ball to topple off his kicking tee on two occasions, keeps his nerve to knock over the extra two points and reduce the deficit to six.

Our TV colleagues at Sky Sports report it's a suspected broken leg for Michael McIlorum. Horrible news if that's proved to be the case. Speedy recovery, Michael.

In the meantime, Wigan's Tony Clubb goes in with a meaty tackle to win possession back for the Warriors. A hint of the shoulder charge about it, but the home side won't care too much about that.

  18. try

Try number two for Brisbane goes to Kodi Nikorima.

The Kiwi half-back takes advantage of a ricochet off the post to touch down and give the Broncos a healthy lead.

His younger brother, Jayden, impressed for Sydney Roosters last night. Quite a weekend for the Nikorima family.

A sight no rugby league fan wants to see - Michael McIlorum leaves the field on a stretcher and the Wigan crowd rise as one to applaud him from the pitch.

He responds with some applause of his own. Hopefully the injury isn't as bad as it first looked.

He's the pivot, he touches the ball more than anyone else, he's the conductor, the man who orchestrates with the baton. And Wigan are a bit skinny in the hooker position.
