Oh, this could be a big blow for Wigan.

Michael McIlorum rocks his right ankle in a tackle with Anthony Milford and the Warriors hooker is not in good shape - not at all.

McIlorum is absolutely pivotal to this Wigan team, and he'll be a huge loss if he can't continue.

Wigan rebuild from that early concession nicely, as Dom Manfredi is solid under another high bomb and then some good forward intent earns a couple of repeat sets.

Broncos try scorer Corey Oates puts in a stonking hit on Anthony Gelling two metres from the whitewash, before Greg Eden safely gathers a high kick to relieve the pressure on the NRL side's line.

Corey Oates with a try for Brisbane? Up to the video referee...

The winger's foot was so, so close to the touchline as he grounded the ball in the left corner. It's given, and it's first blood to the Broncos.

The boos from the home fans tell you what they think of that decision...

Good start from Wigan, they're showing patience, pressure, spreading the play and pushing on the fringes. They need to stay patient.

The feature of NRL teams, in the back-field if you surrender they'll belt you and drive you back. You have to be really committed, ramp up and get the leg-speed going.

  7. Wigan Warriors 0-0 Brisbane Broncospublished at 8 mins

Encouraging start from Wigan, this. Willie Isa is held up over the try line, and on the last tackle Liam Farrell can't quite gather another Matty Smith kick.

A moral victory in the opening eight minutes, but no points yet for the Warriors.

  8. Wigan Warriors 0-0 Brisbane Broncospublished at 7 mins

The first big chance goes Wigan's way but the hosts can't quite take advantage of back-to-back penalties - yet.

Matty Smith puts a grubber kick underneath the posts and Kodi Mikorima has to tap it behind for a goal-line drop-out.

  9. Wigan Warriors 0-0 Brisbane Broncospublished at 4 mins

Young Wigan half-back George Williams knocks on near halfway, giving Brisbane decent field position, but the Warriors produce some huge hits to halt the charge of the Broncos forwards and the opportunity passes.

More of the same required for the next 76 minutes or so.

  10. Wigan Warriors 0-0 Brisbane Broncospublished at 3 mins

A couple of "five drives and a kick" sets, one for either side, to get us going.

Wigan's Dom Manfredi is equal to a high Broncos kick and the Warriors have a chance to build an attack.

As the teams prepare to take to the field at the DW Stadium, some thoughts from Wigan captain Sean O'Loughlin - seen here on the right casually leaning against the World Club Series trophy...

"It's probably one of the best things about this competition - to play against some of the best players in the world is a great test for everybody involved.

"If we want this competition to continue being a success, we need to get wins in it as well, and we'll be doing our best on Saturday to do that."

About 24 hours ago, Sydney Roosters ensured it would be a winning start for NRL clubs in the 2016 World Club Series.

In fact, Australian sides have won all four matches since the inception of the World Club Series last year.

  14. When Dragons blew Wigan awaypublished at 19:56

Wigan Warriors v Brisbane Broncos (20:00 GMT)

Although sadly Wayne Bennett wasn't at the DW Stadium to see it, having flown back to Australia to be with his "gravely ill" mother-in-law,, external the St George Illawarra side he led to NRL premiership glory added the World Club Challenge honour to the board at Wigan in 2011.

Brett Morris, Matt Cooper and Cameron King scored to stun the Warriors, whose brace of tries came from George Carmont, and included a sensational individual effort from the Kiwi centre.

It proved the final season for Bennett at the Dragons, but a profitable spell having delivered a first premiership in 2010, since the merger of the Dragons and Steelers.

Wayne Bennett is in the UK for the first time since being appointed England coach, and no doubt will be keeping a close eye on some of the Wigan players who could make his national squad in the future.

Bennett, 66, will combine his role as Brisbane head coach with his new position with the English national team, having replaced Steve McNamara earlier this month.

"Steve has done a really good job," he said. "The team has shown some improvement and they've just had a wonderful series victory over New Zealand.

"Everybody is talking about taking that next step and that's why I'm here, hopefully I can take them to the next level."

Milford, normally alongside the absent Ben Hunt, forms a potent half-back option for the Broncos and will team up with New Zealand international Kodi Nikorima.

Milford is a slippery runner capable of breaking the line, scored 13 tries in 2015 and even posted more busts than speedy three-quarter James Roberts - now a Broncos team-mate.

There's history between the clubs, we've got memories of the great Wigan sides of the 1990s. I do fancy Wigan, this is a great opportunity and although they're not playing so well this season, they're battle-hardened. But Brisbane have about nine internationals, they're not too shoddy.

Wigan's Anthony Gelling charging down Corey Parker's extra-time penalty remains one of the funniest things I've ever seen in sport.

Gelling was yellow-carded, and Parker struck the re-taken kick between the posts to earn the Broncos a thrilling victory.

  19. History repeatingpublished at 19:47

Wigan Warriors v Brisbane Broncos (20:00 GMT)

It's amazing to think that Wayne Bennett was Brisbane Broncos coach the first time these two frequent foes met in a World Club Challenge back in 1992.

Brisbane won that one, but Wigan got their revenge in the rather soggy final of the World Sevens that same year.

The Cherry and Whites were victorious against the Broncos in the 1994 World Club Challenge final, becoming the first team to win in the southern hemisphere in the competition.

Bennett's return to Suncorp Stadium as coach for a second spell last season coincided with another pairing of the two giants in the newly created World Club Series.

It was 12-12 on the hooter, but a Corey Parker penalty goal snatched it for the Broncos in golden-point time.
