Another bruising, thrill-packed, rollercoaster of a domestic rugby league season has passed, with Wigan the victors.

Warrington, awaiting a first championship since 1955, failed to follow in the footsteps of 2016's history makers Hull FC and Cronulla - who ended their drought with the NRL Grand Final win against Melbourne.

Wigan end the year with a trophy, their doggedness and team spirit coming to the fore.

That's it now til early next year... it can't come soon enough.

Goodnight, and thanks for following the greatest game with us over the past eight months.

    It's been a pleasure.

He might be famous for his commentary exploits on another broadcaster but Mike 'Stevo' Stephenson is a man who transcends the game - and he retired after today's game.

Much like Eddie Waring and Ray French before him, Stevo has become synonymous with rugby league and his catchphrases like 'second stanza', 'T-R-Y-TIME' and 'utilise the dummy runner' have gone down in folklore.

    He will be missed.

Super League might have been wrapped up with tonight's finish to proceedings and Wigan's championship - but there is still some significant rugby league to be played before the players get a proper break.

England, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand will do battle in the Four Nations which kicks off at the end of the month.

Australia play Scotland at Hull KR's Lightstream Stadium on Friday, 28 October.

England host New Zealand at Huddersfield's John Smith's Stadium on Saturday, 29 October.

"I've been here many years, with these boys for years, it's going to be emotional but I'm looking forward to my next challenge."

Charnley is heading to rugby union club Sale Sharks after this season.

"I'm going to enjoy the next couple of days with these boys."

England international Sarginson is heading down to the NRL in Australia to play for Gold Coast Titans in 2017.

"Every Grand Final is unique, we've written our own story, we've had so much adversity and wanted to put it right.

"To do what we've done is something really special.

"Defence has pulled us out of games all year, we've ground out wins and tonight the lads really stuck to it."

    FT: Warrington 6-12 Wigan

That performance could be massive towards getting him in Wayne Bennett's England squad this autumn.

    FT: Warrington 6-12 Wigan

How disappointing it is for the Warrington fans, players and coaching staff, particularly as they led for large periods before Wigan fought back.

Kurt Gidley looked a shattered man, having played his heart out the whole year, the top points scorers in the Super League scored just one try against a dogged Wigan defence.

Was the Ryan Atkins no-try the turning point? Who knows, but the game turned swiftly after that.

  13. Farewells to Grand Final heroespublished at 20:03 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    FT: Warrington 6-12 Wigan

How fitting for Dan Sarginson's kick to have teed up Josh Charnley, what with both players departing from Wigan this winter.

Charnley crossed after Oliver Gildart had cancelled out a score from Declan Patton.

That proved key and the pair will bow out for Gold Coast Titans and Sale Sharks respectively as heroes.
