    Warrington 0-0 Wigan

The first carry of the game from Ashton Sims was met by a shuddering hit, I think the scene has been set.

Warrington go through a bit of one-out stuff in their first set, Wigan knock on in theirs.

Glimmer of early success for Warrington.

    Brian Noble
Ex-Great Britain coach on 5 live

"Hull FC really struggled with the hangover from the Challenge Cup final and didn't really find form after that.

"That allowed Wigan to sneak up on everyone else, for large parts of the season Wigan haven't been at the scintillating best you would expected of them - what they have been, however, is exceptionally good defensively.

"What we have in the grand final now is the best attacking team in Warrington against the best defensive team which is Wigan."

From a purely statistical point of view, Wigan have the advantage over Warrington for today's game.

They've beaten the Wolves, or the Wire depending on your vintage, twice at Old Trafford in finals - once in the old Premiership final in 1986-87, and then against three years ago in this same competition.

Warrington's two appearances came back-to-back, both times going ahead before being pegged back to lose against Leeds and the Warriors.

Not much between the two sides this season though, which is why this game is so hotly anticipated.

  14. Season recap: Septemberpublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    Warrington v Wigan (18:00 BST)

History was made with the new format as Leigh Centurions returned to Super League for the first time since 2005.

Victory against Huddersfield Giants was enough to secure their place, putting the Fartowners in danger of the drop at their expense.

In the event the Giants did enough to stay up thanks to a Danny Brough drop-goal at Hull KR, who were sent tumbling into the Championship by Salford in the Million Pound Game.

Warrington won against a tiring Hull FC side to edge the League Leaders' Shield, and then ended a St Helens hoodoo to seal their place at Old Trafford.

Wigan, even without the talismanic Sean O'Loughlin and Sam Tomkins, had enough to overcome Hull in their semi-final and seal a fourth straight Grand Final appearance.

    Hull FC celebrateImage source, SWPIX.COM

While the Super 8s dominated much of the month's focus, the Challenge Cup final at the end of the month was as good a final as has been witnessed.

Hull FC, at the ninth time of trying, finally banished their Wembley woes with a thrilling comeback victory against Warrington - with half-back Marc Sneyd awarded the Lance Todd Trophy.

While the top four continued as they had left off in Super League amid Catalans' total slump in form, Castleford Tigers finally hit their stride to give hope for 2017 to the fans down the Lane, with Denny Solomona in particular attracting plenty of admirers.

That said, the big stories were coming from the Qualifiers, with Leeds and Leigh Centurions flying and the chances of a Championship side being promoted for the first-time growing stronger and stronger.

    Warrington v Wigan (18:00 BST)

St Helens, as they always do, finished the regular 23 rounds in championship form - winning all four games including a derby victory against old foes Wigan to set-up the Super 8s.

Catalans seemed to be running out of gas, but Hull, Warrington and Wigan were maintaining their form enough to suggest they would have a big say in the end of season play-offs,

Leeds Rhinos also rediscovered their mojo, too late though to make the top eight but enough to give their fans hope of avoiding embarrassment in their Qualifiers foray once the Super 8s kicked-in.

Huddersfield ended the 23 rounds bottom of the table, with mid-season appointment head coach Rick Stone handed the task of maintaining Super League status for 2017.

  17. Season recap: Junepublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    Warrington v Wigan (18:00 BST)

Salford ended May with a six-point deduction for historic breaches of the salary cap subject to appeal, and it appeared to have taken its toll on form in June with defeats against Wigan, Leeds and Huddersfield.

At this stage Catalans Dragons looked likely contenders for a top four spot with a run of three straight wins that was eventually checked by Warrington - who were unbeaten throughout the month.

Hull FC showed their credentials with three wins from four, including a huge success at Wigan but Leeds again proved a bogey side with victory against the Black and Whites at Headingley.

Woah, woah, woah it's Magic! The 2016 event lived up to the name with some sparkling rugby league in Newcastle.

Castleford Tigers showed signs of their talent amid a campaign hampered by injuries, fighting back to beat Warrington and Hull FC were the pride of the city in victory of rivals KR, but the story of the weekend belonged to Wakefield.

With former Hull KR boss Chris Chester in charge, Trinity won nine from 10 in all competitions to pull away from danger - and their Jacob Miller drop goal-inspired win against Catalans at St James' Park was among the highlights.

Wigan also hit a hot run of form that included wins against Leeds and the Tigers.

  20. Season recap: Aprilpublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    Warrington v Wigan (18:00 BST)

After a mixed couple of months, April saw Hull FC hit their straps for the first time.

Four wins from five, with a two-point, wet-weather defeat by struggling Leeds Rhinos the only blot on the month's results, lifted the Airlie Birds up the table.

Warrington had a little wobble early on in the month with a nilling by Huddersfield but recovered at the end of the month with back-to-back wins against Wigan and Widnes.
