The difference between these two teams could be the bounce of a ball or a kick.

That is the level that England need to aspire to be.

Right, let's switch our attentions to the main event of the night as defending Four Nations champions New Zealand take on world champions Australia.

The last time these two sides met was on 15 October in Perth, with the Aussies running out 26-6 victors.

We have seen Scotland get into the competition by right. If they add another couple of players to their squad they can be a force for sure.

    England 38-12 Scotland

Scotland coach Steve McCormack: “I am really proud we tested them. In the second half the sin bin didn’t help but I am really proud.

“We are playing against the best three teams in the world. We competed for long periods much better than on Friday and we expect to be better next week.

“We could have tested England more. The penalty count killed us, that was a big factor. We started the game better and played some good stuff.

“England were good in the second half and showed they can play with the ball but we need to look at the penalty count.”

I am not surprised with that interview. Wayne Bennett has got to raise the bar, they were below the Test match level standard that is needed to beat Australia.

He was brought in to raise expectations and it is not just good enough to get over the line with a win and I don't think they dished that up for him.

  7. 'We were bad'published at 19:43 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2016

    England 38-12 Scotland

England coach Wayne Bennett: "Just pleased with the win that is all you can say about it.

"We were bad, we weren’t good first 20. We got closer to what I expect in the second half

"I want them to play to their ability and they were a way off that."

Have any played themselves out of contention for the match against Australia next weekend: "A couple of them probably have, yeh.

"George Williams was good but can play a lot better than he did tonight too.

"They have got a bit of thinking to do, they need to have a look at themselves."

George Williams' speed was outstanding. He created tries with that alone. He added another dimension and when England used their assets it made it a whole lot easier for them.

Man of the match George Williams: "Scotland turned up, we were rusty early on and they scored two good tries, we will look back and not be happy.

"I did alright. We were good in the second half. That is where we posted the points. I am just trying to play well and see what Wayne thinks."

England's Ryan Hall: "I have been asked so many times about the 30th try but it was good to it get over. The ball bounced up nicely.

"Wayne Bennett told us to do something before the game and we didn't do it. We got a roasting at half time.  In the second half we mixed it up and scored more points."

England coach Wayne Bennett is not happy.

He is giving BBC TV interviewer Tanya Arnold a hard time with a series of short answers.

Quotes, the ones that he bothered to utter, coming up.

Hi a Batley fan here. Can you tell John Kear well done in qualifying with Wales for the Rugby League World Cup in 2017 and I look forward to seeing him in Perth in November next year

    Neville Wright.

Italy claimed the last berth for that tournament on Friday by beating Russia 76-0 in a closely fought contest.

Performance-wise Scotland can take great heart. They had done some tremendous defensive work. They showed they could open England's defence up. Their big problem was penalties. Eng progressed as the game went on and wore them down.

    So...

If New Zealand beat Australia later this evening, it will be a straight shootout between England and Australia in London next weekend to reach the final.

If Australia win, all three sides COULD end up on four points after the final round of matches.

That means it would could down to points difference and that six points at the end from England could prove to a big score.

A good piece of captaincy from Sam Burgess. He was insistent. They had two last plays but once again George Williams as the creator. That could be a crucial six points.

And opting for the extra points pays off.

George Williams creates it again, clipping a kick through which ricochets off a Scotland defender.

Liam Farrell does not mind, as the ball pops into his hands to go over.

Luke Gale adds the two points.
