So, a five-year wait for an English world champion comes to an end, with Wigan taking the World Club Challenge trophy for the first time in 23 years.

It's been a wonderful couple of days for Super League, with Warrington beating Brisbane Broncos last night.

Wigan will no doubt be celebrating this victory for a while to come, but it's back to normality before too long.

They take on Widnes Vikings in Super League on Friday.

Cronulla head coach Shane Flanagan tells Sky Sports: "Credit to Wigan, they hung in there and we didn't execute real well.

"No-one takes any credit away from the winners, but we were our own worst enemy today.

"I'll be glad to get back to Australia where there's a two-referee system, because I thought it was awful today."

Wigan Warriors head coach Shaun Wane tells Sky Sports: "The players have showed unbelievable character against the best in Australia.

"Credit where credit's due, Warrington have done a great job and we've done okay today!

"It shows that we've got something to be proud of in Super League."

Wigan half-back Thomas Leuluai tells BBC Radio 5 live sports extra: "That was a tough game today. we showed a lot of desire and defended awesome. Big games are always decided with defence and we took our opportunities."

Wigan winger Joe Burgess tells Sky Sports: "I loved every minute of it. It means everything and kicks off the season to win other trophies. I think we'll enjoy this tonight."

What a great weekend for Super League. Wigan have taken it to the NRL champions and beaten them fairly and squarely. What a great afternoon for British rugby league.

Joe Burgess is the hero, scoring three tries to complete a whitewash for England over Australia in this year's World Club Series.

It's a record fourth title for Warriors, a stunning achievement.

The referee thinks Joe Burgess was offside, but it will be reviewed.

They turn the ball over inside their own half, and the clock is fast running out.

Into the last five minutes, how are Wigan's nerves?

Anthony Gelling coughs up possession inside the Sharks half, but Cronulla can't take advantage.

Anthony Fifita uses his strength to drive a mass of Wigan tacklers backwards and towards the line, before he's finally stopped inches short.

His team-mates can't build on his good work though, a knock-on turning the ball back to Wigan.

There's going to be another break in play as the teams come together following a hefty hit on Sam Powell.

The Wigan attack ends with a grubber kick straight into the arms of Gerard Beale, who is swiftly wrapped up by Warriors tacklers.

The hosts keep the pressure on with the second and third tackles, before a penalty allows Cronulla a bit of breathing room to start their next attack.

Morgan Escare tries to add a point with a drop-goal attempt, but he skews the ball wide to the left.

His side will get another chance to add to their lead though, as Cronulla knock on inside their own half.

George Williams knocks on near the half-way line - is the pressure starting to get to Wigan?

There's not much time left for Sharks, who might have to start taking a few more risks in attack if they're to get the two tries they need.

The referee calls for a Cronulla knock-on and Warriors survive.

The hosts kick for the corner, and it's not a bad one, setting Cronulla up deep inside their own half.
