    Samoa 6-20 England

England are forced into some more defending straight from kick-off. But the Samoa attack has seen less polish than a dusty mantelpiece. They are lacking the guile and precision to puncture the English defence.

    Samoa 6-20 England

There was a comedy moment in the build-up to that England try - well, not for Samoa. Anthony Milford was blocked off as Josh Hodgson ran through...by the referee! To be fair, I don't think Milford would have got near Hodgson anyway.

CONVERTED TRY - Samoa 6-20 Englandpublished at 53 mins

    Try Hodgson, con Gale

England respond in the finest way possible - with a try. England's half-backs show their quality, Kevin Brown and Luke Gale combining to send Josh Hodgson scampering through the middle. Once chance, one try.

Gale knocks over the extras from in front of the posts.

    Normal service resumed.

    Samoa 6-14 England

Samoa are knocking on the English door like a set of angry debt collectors. But can they get inside the try-line? Not on this occasion. Another grubber is watched carefully out of play by Stefan Ratchford with a couple of blue-shirts thundering up behind him.

Here's a chance. Samoa scrum-half Fa'amanu Brown scuffs through a grubber kick from deep, which is gamely chased by Joey Leilua. He gets a boot to it, threatening to pounce and run through to score. Ryan Hall is alert to come across and cover, only to knock on and give Samoa another chance...

    Try Leilua, con Milford

Ladies and gentleman, we appear to have a game on our hands. Samoa take advantage of that English gift. Centre Joey Leilua barging past a handful of white-shirted defenders to touch down.

Anthony Milford lines up the conversion from the right side of the posts, arrowing the ball straight through the middle.

    Samoa 0-14 England

Ah, we've jinxed him. Stefan Ratchford goes gung-ho into claiming a high ball that drift towards the right touchline...he's a sitting duck. Samoa winger Antonio Winterstein hits him - hard - and that's another set for his side. Ratchford was lucky not to end up in Row A...

    Samoa 0-14 England

Stefan Ratchford, who has been impressive at full-back after his controversial selection ahead of Zak Hardaker, dives like a football goalkeeper to pluck out the opening kick.

England run it back with a solid set.

New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) are investigating allegations national captain Jesse Bromwich and team-mate Kevin Proctor bought and took cocaine.

It is claimed the incident took place after New Zealand's 30-12 defeat by Australia in Canberra on Friday.

The allegations emerged in a court case and, although Melbourne Storm's Bromwich and Gold Coast Titans' Proctor were named, neither have been charged.

NZRL says it will take immediate action if the allegations are proven.

"We are working with the NRL (the Australia-based National Rugby League) while investigations into the alleged incident are ongoing and New Zealand Rugby League will not be making any comment until more information becomes available," said an NZRL statement.

  19. 'Selection controversy seems inconsequential'published at 11:36 British Summer Time 6 May 2017

Several individuals have really stood out. Ryan Hall, maintaining his try-per-test match ratio, Jermaine McGillvray has been a handful on the other wing. Sam Burgess' involvement has been his most effective in an England shirt since his return from rugby union.

Stefan Ratchford individual effort showed off his sparkling talents and on debut, Mike McMeeken has looked more than comfortable in the Test match arena.

We've yet to see Chris McQueen from the bench, but all the controversy about selections pre-match seems inconsequential now.

And if England carry on like this, they will go into the World Cup in the Autumn in very high spirits

Given the pre-match billing this Samoa side was given, they have been disappointing. But a lot of that has been down to England's organised  and committed defence
