A positive for the England side is that they have defended four sets on their own tryline.

In the past, they would not have had that character but then they give back possession which you cannot do.

Boyd Cordner has a raid, then Billy Slater... then England lock him up. Slater sends in a kick which drifts over the dead-ball line and suddenly there is respite.

England then turn over shortly after the 20 metre tap after a pass from James Graham is intercepted. Australia back on it.

This is their trademark - the way Cronk, Slater and Smith build pressure.

    Australia 0-4 England

It'll take wild horses to force Cooper Cronk off this paddock. He's got some tissue up his schnozz and is carrying on.

Australia working England over in defence. Unbreached so far... but it's being tested.

Again Jermaine McGillvary right place, right time. England will have to defend again after another drop out.

    Australia 0-4 England

Cooper Cronk has spilled some claret already, but is still running about and has the skills to angle an awkward kick-in behind... such a quality player.

England forced to drop out, as James Graham is grounded in goal. Cronk looks in a bad way here...

    Australia 0-4 England

England's forwards are really making a difference early on. You don't see Dave Klemmer and Aaron Woods bossed too often.

Let's hope it's the shape of things to come.

Australia a danger when wounded... Cooper Cronk was so close then as Australia cut England right open but Jermaine McGillvary goes from try-scorer to try saver with a key intercept.

    100mph stuff!

    Well, England are happy.

Jermaine McGillvary finishes a very competent opening play. Sean O'Loughlin is the key, with a long pass across to Gareth Widdop, who then finds McGillvary.

Super effort from Huddersfield winger Jermaine McGillvary to put England in front!

Five tries in five. He took a looping pass wide from Gareth Widdop high above his head and had the presence of mind to get the ball down in close quarters.

Sam Burgess showed his menace during the set. Great patience from England too not to panic and come up with the clutch play.

Only disappointment is Gareth Widdop missed the conversion. Could be key.

    Australia 0-0 England

Phew. Australia bashed their way inside the England 10 but Cooper Cronk's kick is overcooked.

Then a penalty which takes England into a decent field position...

    Australia 0-0 England

"Test match football at its best," says Brian Noble after a couple of shuddering early hits from the Australians as England go through their first set.

Their exit kick gets Australia back in their own end, now it's England's turn to set about the Aussies. Cooper Cronk takes a wrap in the ribs from Sam Burgess.

    Tone has been set!

  12. Kick-offpublished at 10:11 British Summer Time 27 October 2017

    Australia 0-0 England

Matt Cecchin is the match referee, his touch judges are Chris Butler and Chris Kendall while Ben Thaler is in the review box.

This World Cup is officially under way as a sweeping kick-off from Cameron Smith sails downfield and into the waiting arms of the England defensive line.

Let's go! It's on! Welcome to the World Cup one and all!

  14. Australia bring back the 'war cry'published at 10:10 British Summer Time 27 October 2017

    Australia v England (10:00 BST)

Australia have a 'war cry', a 'Rise' presentation read by skipper Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston to gee up the Kangaroos. There's music. tribal dancing. A circle around Smith, who is crouched before rising. A green and gold 'haka'

England stand before it, showing full respect to be fair.

The key today is to rattle Australia, not by fighting but by playing physically and executing the gameplan.

We need to create a lot of pressure and be ahead on the scoreboard at half-time.

Phil Molyneux: Dunno where these lot are getting there confidence from I’m as patriotic as anyone but we’re a long way off the Aussies.

Sam Fairhurst: Been looking forward to kick off for a while! England to beat Australia by six points! Come on England!

Former England coach Steve McNamara did a great job and set some great foundations and got this team ready for this World Cup.

Wayne Bennett has sprinkled on the magic dust and he looks after the players, it is all about them. The messages I am hearing from the camp is how happy they all are, we are in a really good place.

Bennett has brought a real feel-food factor to the side.
