  5. Future sound of success?published at 04:41 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2017

Papua New Guinea have been one of the stand-out teams in the competition, comprehensively beating Wales and the USA, and edging out a plucky Ireland in the group stages.

They scored 24 tries in their opening three matches, conceding just two in reply.

Much of their success has been built on a lively back-three, including Castleford-bound Garry Lo and Gold Coast Titans full-back David Mead, and a powerful pack which is anchored by influential veteran Paul Aiton.

Victory against England would put them into the semi-finals, and send a rugby league-crazy nation even more barmy.

    Jon Wilkin
Former England international on BBC Two

Those pacific islands are really strong, and today from Papua New Guinea I expect chaos - they thrive in chaos. And the key for the game in England is to really control that and keep structure.

England's last meeting with Papua New Guinea at a World Cup came in 2008, when they overcame a huge scare from the Kumuls to take the group stage points in a 32-22 victory.

The survivors from that game - James Roby and James Graham - will be wary of the threat posed by the passionate Pacific islanders.

Paul Aiton is the only member of that PNG team to still feature.

England head coach Wayne Bennett is almost in a talkative mood before kick-off.

"Sam is ready to go," he says.

"He's worked really hard on his injury and he's 100% fit."

    That's about all you're getting.

  9. Even the 'Super Coach'...published at 04:36 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2017

England v Papua New Guinea (05:00 GMT)

...can stumble upon a winning formula sometimes.

Who'd have thought injury to Jonny Lomax would have given coach Wayne Bennett the key to unlocking England's attacking rhythm?

In Lomax's absence, Bennett put Dally M half-back of the year Gareth Widdop back to full-back, a position he hadn't played in for England for a good six years. He was a revelation.

Kevin Brown came into the stand-off shirt and added, which rubbed off on Luke Gale at scrum-half.

England found their mojo. It was clearly good enough in Bennett's eyes to earn them a second bite here against Papua New Guinea.

    The aim is simple.

England know what they must do to reach the 2017 Rugby League World Cup final.

They know who stands in their way.

Papua New Guinea first, and if they overcome that test, Tonga lie in wait in the semi-finals.

    Pressure is on.
