Salford, who many tipped to struggle in 2019, have the biggest surprise of the Super League season.

They finished third at the end of the regular season and, after losing to Wigan in their first play-off tie, moved to within one win of a maiden Grand Final by beating Castleford 22-0 last week.

Their spearhead has been half-back Jackson Hastings - who, just to add an extra sub-plot to tonight's game - will be a Wigan player next season.

    Wigan v Salford (19:45 BST)

If Salford are to reach their maiden Grand Final, they'll need to do something they've not managed in four attempts this season - beat defending champions Wigan.

Red Devils coach Ian Watson said: "We've played them four times and come down on the wrong side so it's up to us to make sure we come out on the right side this time.

"We've learned something every time we've played them and feel like we've done certain bits better.

"Like our season, we've grown into each game with Wigan and we feel like we're in good shape going into this one."

One thing we know about Wigan is that they have a winning mentality and have got a commitment to each other. And I know they will be hurting and embarrassed after that performance (at St Helens) last week.

They will be determined to right those wrongs. They will throw everything at this game.

Wigan's results in the early weeks of the season were - well, they were dreadful.

Four defeats in the first five league games left some wondering if the Warriors, under new coach Adrian Lam, would be fighting at the bottom end of the table rather than the top.

However, the Cherry and Whites soon recovered and timed their run into the play-offs to perfection, finishing second behind St Helens in the final table.

Saints thrashed them last week but they've got a second chance tonight to reach their sixth Grand Final in seven seasons.

  5. 'Salford have been outstanding all year'published at 19:24 British Summer Time 4 October 2019

    Wigan v Salford (19:45 BST)

If we get anything close to a repeat of the first play-off meeting between these two clubs a couple of weeks ago, we'll be in for a cracker tonight.

Wigan's defence starred in an 18-12 success over Salford on 20 September.

"Salford have been outstanding all year," said Wigan head coach Adrian Lam. "We've played them a fair few times and it's always gone down to the wire at the back end of the game.

"We respect them and they're in a situation where they've got nothing to lose and they'll fancy themselves from the last time they came here."
