Behind these two Grand Final teams are two top coaches.

For St Helens, Justin Holbrook takes charge of his final game before he moves back to his native Australia to become head coach of National Rugby League side Gold Coast Titans.

"Saturday is what counts most and what we are now worried about," he said. "If we don't win we have to deal with it and accept it. Facts, performances and stats don't lie.

"If we are good enough to win, then great we will take the accolades and if we don't we will cop whatever we have to."

    Ian WatsonImage source, PA Media

In the opposite dugout will be Ian Watson who has forged a reputation for being one of England's brightest coaches since being elevated from Salford assistant to head coach in 2015.

Like Holbrook, he will head Down Under after the Grand Final, but in his role as assistant coach for the Great Britain Rugby League Lions tour.

St Helens v Salford (18:00 BST)

    Iestyn Harris
Former Great Britain and Wales international on BBC Radio 5 Live

If Salford can contain Alex Walmsley and if he's not making inroads after 20-25 minutes then that's when you know that Salford are in this because if he gets on the front foot then expect the key indicators start to play.

Salford need to compete with the rugby league ball, they have got to make sure that they complete their sets and get into the arm wrestle of the game.

  3. 'Final makes dark times worth while'published at 17:41 British Summer Time 12 October 2019

St Helens v Salford (18:00 BST)

Reaching the Grand Final has been quite an achievement for St Helens prop Alex Walmsley when you consider he missed almost the whole of last season with a broken neck.

And the 29-year-old admitted it took him almost half of this campaign, in which he made 22 league appearances, to mentally deal with what it was like to return to action.

'Final makes dark times worth while'

St Helens prop Alex Walmsley says he spent half the season mentally dealing with what it meant to resurrect his career after breaking his neck.

St Helens v Salford (18:00 BST)

It's a massive weekend for Josh Jones as not only is he hoping to help Salford to Grand Final glory, but he's also getting married tomorrow.

Not only that, he could find out he's part of the forthcoming Great Britain Rugby League Lions tour and may have to cancel his honeymoon.

    Read all about it below.

  5. 'The blockbuster v the fairytale'published at 17:38 British Summer Time 12 October 2019

St Helens v Salford (18:00 BST)

    John Kear
Wales & Bradford Bulls coach on BBC Radio 5 Live

If you go into a bookshop and you go into the fantasy fairytale section you've got the Salford Red Devils story.

If you go to the blockbuster section of well constructed novels you're in the St Helens section.

The hardest working team in Super League will be here tonight in Salford but they will up against the best team in St Helens.

    Interesting analogy from John Kear.

  6. What's the weather?published at 17:36 British Summer Time 12 October 2019

St Helens v Salford (18:00 BST)

Not bad actually... and certainly better than at the Rugby Union World Cup in Japan where Typhoon Hagibis has been disrupting the schedule.

The forecast suggests it should be dry, which will hopefully help encourage a game of running rugby. There should be fewer excuses for handling errors.

  7. Outsiders Salford boast big-game experiencepublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 12 October 2019

St Helens v Salford (18:00 BST)

Salford start as outsiders but there is no shortage of experience in their line-up. Nine of their team have played in a Grand Final - either in this country or in the NRL - or in a Challenge Cup final.

They too are unchanged from the side that beat Wigan in their semi-final.

Salford: Evalds; Sio, Welham, Bibby, Inu; Lolohea, Hastings; Mossop, Tomkins, Dudson, Jones, Griffin, McCarthy.

    Interchanges: Lussick, Flanagan, Walker, Burke.

  8. Saints unchanged for Grand Finalpublished at 17:32 British Summer Time 12 October 2019

St Helens v Salford (18:00 BST)

It's a straightforward selection for St Helens coach Justin Holbroook - simply name the same side that cruised past Wigan in the semi-finals.

Repeat that performance this evening and Saints will be tough to beat.

St Helens: Coote; Makinson, Naiqama, Percival, Grace; Fages, Lomax; Walmsley, Roby, Thompson, Taia, Payroux, Knowles.

    Interchanges: McCarthy-Scarsbrook, Amor, Ashworth, Smith.

    Disability game

It has been brilliant to watch the growth of disability rugby league over the past couple of years and today there has been another huge step in taking the game to the attention of the wider public.

Castleford and Wakefield have just completed a demonstration PDRL game on the Old Trafford turf, following in the footsteps of Leeds and Warrington, who took part in a match at Anfield as part of Magic Weekend in May.

You can read more about it in this heart-warming piece by colleague Andrew Aloia.

Salford celebrate win at WiganImage source, PA Media

Salford's journey from the Qualifiers last season to the Grand Final this looked a remote possibility as recently as early July when they slipped to a 36-18 home defeat by Huddersfield Giants, which left them seventh in the table.

But they ended the season with eight successive wins to gatecrash not only the top five, but also finish third which, this year, meant a second chance if they slipped up in their first game of play-off rugby.

They did - losing 18-12 at Wigan - but backed that up by beating both Castleford and then the Warriors in knock-out games, conceding only four points in the process, to head to Old Trafford on a roll of 10 wins in 11 games.

  16. Salford 'misfits' 80 minutes from glorypublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 12 October 2019

St Helens v Salford (18:00 BST)

    Jackson HastingsImage source, PA Media

This time last year Salford needed to emerge through the Qualifiers to retain their Super League status as a consortium of supporters got to grips with the running of the club after taking over from Dr Marwan Koukash in January 2018.

Salford have spent well under the salary cap to ensure they remain financially viable and their clever recruitment, coupled with the intelligent coaching of Ian Watson, has seen them emerge as this season's surprise package.

"We're a bunch of misfits, I've said it before," said half-back Jackson Hastings. "We've got pretty much 30 blokes who have been discarded and told they weren't good enough.

"Everyone that's had a little bit to do with this club that's struggled for so long finally gets a crack at the big stage and, regardless of whatever happens, I'm so proud to be one of the 17 blokes that will hopefully get the nod to go out there and try to do the unthinkable."

  17. Do Saints have an Achilles heel?published at 17:14 British Summer Time 12 October 2019

St Helens v Salford (18:00 BST)

If St Helens have had a weakness during coach Justin Holbrook's time in charge, it has been the accusation that they have "bottled" big games.

Beaten in both the Challenge Cup and Super League semi-finals by Catalans and Warrington respectively last year, they were again beaten by the Wire in August's Challenge Cup final after unconvincingly beating Championship side Halifax in the last four.

But they went some way to shaking that tag a fortnight ago when they simply blew away rivals Wigan to dish out a 40-10 thrashing in the semi-finals and book themselves a place at the Theatre of Dreams.

  18. Dominant Saints clear at the toppublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 12 October 2019

St Helens v Salford (18:00 BST)

For the second successive year, St Helens proved themselves to be the best side in Super League during the regular season, lifting the League Leaders' Shield.

The class of 2018, inspired by Man of Steel Ben Barba, finished six points clear at the top but ended up being beaten at home by Warrington in the semi-finals.

But this year's vintage have been even more dominant, with a 16-point gap between themselves and second-placed Wigan.

And they only lost three times all year - twice to relegated London Broncos when fielding under-strength sides and at Catalans Dragons.

During the short walk across Salford Quays to Old Trafford, it was hard to miss the sheer volume of Salford supporters that were already soaking in the atmosphere before the club's first ever Super League Grand Final.

The bars around MediaCity were almost full to capacity a good three hours before kick-off, with Red Devils fans vastly outnumbering their St Helens counterparts.

  20. 'The most dominant side v the most incredible story'published at 17:06 British Summer Time 12 October 2019

St Helens v Salford (18:00 BST)

Come on then, own up. Who picked St Helens v Salford as the Grand Final at the start of the season?

If you did then you have the predictive powers of Nostradamus and feel free to drop me a line with tonight's lottery numbers.

Seriously, while Saints were considered one of the pre-season favourites after falling at the semi-final stage last season, Salford have upset the odds to reach their first Grand Final 12 months on from escaping relegation in the Qualifiers.

That's just one of the reasons why BBC Rugby League correspondent Dave Woods reckons this is a story of the most dominant side Super League has ever seen against the most incredible story that Super League has ever seen.
