"Great speed by Campagnaro in midfield. Rhys Priestland was slightly isolated, turned over the ball, and Italy saw where the space was and identified it and in the end got their reward.

"And I don't think that was a forward pass - you have to give Italy the benefit of the doubt."

  2. TRY (Campagnaro; Allan missed conv)published at 15:29 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2014

Well, well, well... The Welsh defence is caught snoozing and Michele Campagnaro chases Leonardo Sarto's canny kick down the line and dives over. But the video referee is called into action and must work out whether Campagnaro passed the ball forward when he picked out Sarto on the wing before the kick ahead. Replays suggest the pass was a touch forward but the try is given. Tommaso Allan undercooks the conversion.

Rhys Priestland gets the second half started and the Italians are once again under pressure and are forced to defend a Wales line-out a few metres outside the 22. The players are back on the pitch. Alun Wyn Jones pulls up his socks, Alex Cuthbert takes his place on the wing. The second half is nearly under way.

Leigh Halfpenny can do pretty much everything. The shy full-back can kick, tackle, run, side-step... And the man who came second in last year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, has now become Wales's third highest scoring player of all time, surpassing James Hook's total of 346 thanks to his seven points in the first half. He has now collected 351 points in the Welsh shirt and will probably add to that tally in the next 40 minutes.

"Wales will probably be disappointed they have not gone through more phases, but they will be happy with the score at half-time. You have to feel for Esposito. It's his first cap and it was a cruel bounce of the ball. Italy came back into it but it's comfortable for Wales."

"Wales will have to carry the ball a little bit more but it has been very comfortable for them with that late try by Scott Williams."

    Robert Jones
Former Wales scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"I don't want to throw too many plaudits towards Wales but they are a very confident side and they know what they have to do to play the rugby they want. Italy have looked a lot more creative than I'd expected and they've created one or two chances, but they haven't had the discipline in this first half to keep the ball long enough."

  10. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:15 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2014

That's the end of the first half and off trots Alun Wyn Jones with his team-mates following closely behind. That late try opens up a handsome margin for the reigning champions. Can Italy come back from here?

"That's a body blow to the Italians just before half-time. It was good play by Scott Williams who showed good support - he's on form."

"That try's got Wales written all over it, with that power in midfield. Italy did not make the tackle and Wales were through with support runners all around. There was great work by Scott Williams, giving the Italians something to think about. And Jamie Roberts has looked good, as effective in a Welsh jersey as ever."

A blistering counter-attack on the back of an iffy Welsh line-out. Jamie Roberts does what he does best, which is punching holes in midfield, and Scott Williams is on the centre's inside and is rewarded for his support. Leigh Halfpenny, as we would expect, is successful with the conversion.

There's not much between the two teams, really, with Wales having gained 102m so far in this match while their opponents have made 100m. Martin Castrogiovanni is penalised at the scrum and the hirsute prop just waves his arm in disgust. Rhys Priestland relieves pressure by finding touch. One last attack perhaps?

"That is a knock on - he doesn't think he's scored. He's a classy player, classy man, he is going back for the scrum."

"Talk about body language - I think Parisse knew himself that try wasn't going to be awarded!

"But it was a very clever move from Italy, with Parisse staying out on the right wing and picking up on a lovely kick into the corner."

George North fails to grab the high ball and it falls kindly for Sergio Parisse. But the Italian captain isn't celebrating despite crossing the line. Did he knock on? Yes. What sportsmanship by the great number eight for not trying to dupe us all with a wild celebration.

Super defending by the visitors as they sniff out that Welsh attack and the so-called underdogs are rolling with the punches. Six minutes of the first half remaining...

By the way, the voting for today's question, which was 'who will win the Six Nations', has closed. It couldn't remain open forever. It just couldn't.

James Taylor:, external The Welsh scrum doesn't look good at all. The England pack will eat them alive if they play like this at Twickenham.

He kicks ahead... danger averted for the Italians, but Wales win the subsequent line-out... Forward the hosts rumble with the tryline on the horizon.
