The game is being played inside the Welsh half with the indefatigable Parisse leading the would-be Italian comeback. Michele Campagnaro is in some space down the right, but he barges into Scott Williams. The Italians go inside... but Taulupe Faletau wins the turnover.

Richard Hibbard holds firm under pressure, finding his man in the line-out when just 5m from his own line. Wales kick downfield but Italy surge forward once more. It's all being played out to the sound of a few men singing the Welsh hymn 'Calon Lan'...

David from Bristol: Just thought I'd clear this up - by definition in IRB law 12: "A throw forward occurs when a player throws or passes the ball forward. 'Forward' means towards the opposing team's dead ball line." The hands going backwards don't matter, no matter what anyone says. It wasn't a try. Thanks.

Paul James is indeed penalised, though it was perhaps harsh to expect a prop who isn't so fleet of foot to get out of Tommaso Allan's way after the outside-half chipped over the Welsh defence. A wonderful line-out take by Sergio Parisse but the Italian attack comes to nothing.

Neither side able to put together a sustained period of pressure to rattle the opposition defence and the players earn a temporary breather as there's a slight delay in play after the referee asks the assistant referee whether Paul James blocked Tommaso Allan.

Alex Cuthbert, with Sergio Parisse grabbing onto his right heel, attempts to find his fellow winger George North but a phalanx of Italian defenders stop the two big Welshmen. A couple of substitutions to tell you about. Andrew Coombes comes on for Luke Charteris while Francesco Minto is on for Italy. I'm afraid I didn't see who trotted off for the Italians. I'm sorry.

A shuffle of the hips and a change of pace from Rhys Priestland who evades one would-be Italian tackler, and then another. He's heading for the corner of the Italian tryline but the outside-half is pushed into touch by Luke McLean. It would have been a wonderful try.

Chloe June:, external What the actual heck? Italy's try was a forward pass so the try shouldn't have been given.

Alistair Pullen:, external To be honest, there is no real doubt about the validity of the pass - it was forward but the try afterwards was great.

James Humberstone:, external The Faletau v Parisse battle is fantastic to watch. It makes for a great game.

"Good pressure by the Italians. They need to keep their composure whereas Wales need a spark. They need someone to do something. It's all gone a bit flat from their point of view. The Italians are controlling the tempo of the game."

Wales fans gripped by anxiety. Leonardo Sarto has a sniff as Jamie Roberts messes up an attempted grubber and the ball ricochets kindly for the Italian wing, but Rhys Priestland gathers a bobbling ball and Wales can breathe again.

The Italians searching for the gap in the Welsh defence. They get no joy by attempting to bulldoze their way through Scott Williams but the Azzurri gaining territory... moving forward inch by inch... the visitors spin it wide but a promising phase ends with Mauro Bergamasco punished for not staying on his feet. Mauro!

"Converting that penalty would have made a difference for Italy, just allowing them to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Italy could have had five more crucial points if they'd hit their kicks."

"It's gone very quiet in the Millennium Stadium. Warren Gatland will not be happy with his side's performance after the interval."

  14. MISSED PENALTY (Allan)published at 15:38 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2014

Luke McLean finds touch and from the ruck which subsequently follows Wales are caught offside. Tommaso Allan fails to punish Warren Gatland's men, however, and the outside-half simply looks skywards. Opportunity missed.

Joe Benians:, external Both of these tries have been preceded by forward passes. Only one brought to review, and neither penalised.

Kev Sullivan:, external Much is said about the "direction of hands" in forward pass. No such thing in the rule book.

Gwalch Mon:, external Why make the forward pass rule so open? If the ball goes forward, it's a forward pass. Done. Italy deserved that try though, so..

The Welsh front-row is back on song, the trio turning their Italian counterparts a full 90 degrees, which gives the hosts a great opportunity to attack from inside opposition territory. But the Italian pack, their pride pricked, responds in the subsequent scrum by pushing the Welsh back on their heels.
