Were Scotland wise to end their season on a four-Test tour over three continents? I guess new coach Vern Cotter needed to get a look at as many players as possible.

There are a lot of questions for Scottish rugby fans to discuss over a pint or two tonight, so I'll sign off now and leave you to it. Thanks for your company.

Scotland will look back at wins over USA, Canada and Argentina on this tour but this is a real downer to end on. I'm not sure anyone expected anything other than a home win but the way the visitors were brushed aside is hugely disappointing.

It's hard to judge in such a one-sided match but South Africa clearly have great strength in depth and are sure to be a major force at next year's World Cup.

Does Vern Cotter have time to develop Scotland in time for the big party next year? It's going to be a very tough job...

The South Africa fly-half coasted through his debut, with some neat passing and his kicking was impressive.

Former Scotland prop Peter Wright on BBC Radio Scotland

"They stuck in manfully at the end of a long, hard season but they were just overpowered by a bigger, stronger, better team who are preparing for the Rugby Championship.

"I'm not too sure why Scotland took on a fourth Test on this tour."

Handshakes are exchanged, with the Scots out on their feet after a brutal mauling from a second-string South Africa. It was a horror show from start to finish for the visitors.

The clock moves into the red but the home side are no mood to kick for touch as they seek a ninth try.

  8. TRYpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

This is hard to watch as a Scotland fan but you have to marvel at the power of the Springboks and their utterly ruthless approach as big Lood de Jager hammers his way through two tacklers to touch down. Debutant Marnitz Boshoff knocks over the conversion.

  9. Postpublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Duncan Weir chases after his own bobbling kick but there is Lwazi Mvovo to beat him to it and the winger is off and running. He gets greedy looking for a hat-trick and is eventually bundled over by the beleaguered Scottish defence.

John McEnerney on Twitter: "The Abokalypse now in full flow! Now it will be just bodies on the line 4 Scot that's all they can do! SA prepping for Aus NZ!"

The frightening thing is there will be several big names back in the South Africa team when the Rugby Championship starts...

  11. Postpublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

The Scotland players are dazed and confused in the wake of relentless attacks from the home side. There will be several bumps to deal with at full-time, along with bruised egos.

  12. Postpublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Three new caps for the Springboks as the hosts look to the bench. Scotland are back to 15 men as Jonny Gray gets on but they could do with five more to deal with this rampant home side.

  13. TRYpublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Scotland have lost all semblance of shape out there as South Africa slice their way through again. This time it's Lood de Jager touching down under the posts. The lumbering lock ran a long way with the ball and Handre Pollard pops over the extras from close-range.

  14. TRYpublished at 17:26 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Oh dear. This is getting very messy now as an ambitious "Hollywood" pass from Henry Pyrgos is picked off by Lwazi Mvovo and there's no catching the speedy winger from near halfway. Handre Pollard hammers over a very difficult conversion, making it look easy.

  15. Postpublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

South Africa are simply swarming all over Scotland looking for try number six but the ball is nicked and suddenly Stuart Hogg is breaking over the halfway line but the full-back cannot escape the clutches of chasing pack.

  16. TRYpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

South Africa work the ball out wide and JP Pietersen crashes through three opponents, managing to flip over and stretch out a hand to touch the ball down. A quick consultation with the TMO confirms the score is good. Handre Pollard's conversion attempt is wild.

  17. Postpublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Both sides make a number of changes but there is no let-up in the South Africa pressure. A fifth try looks inevitable but a loose pass from Handre Pollard spares Scotland - for now...

  18. TRYpublished at 17:14 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Scotland are all at sea as a South African driving maul gains momentum and it's a second try of the day for Marcel Coetzee. It's a simple job for Handre Pollard to add the extras.

  19. SIN BINpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Scotland are down to 14 men as Tim Swinson is shown a yellow card for some jiggery-pokery. The visitors, perhaps fearing such an outcome, tried to replace the lock with Jonny Gray but that switch will have to wait.

Tyrone Holmes in on for his Scotland debut. A big moment for the Johannesburg-born Glasgow Warriors flanker.
